Maggie Thatcher’s legacy?

Tories want council tenants to get cash to buy private homes

The Conservatives will today unveil proposals to roll out the "home-owning democracy" first promised by Mgt Thatcher, as their public services policy review group argues that council tenants should be given cash to buy houses in the private sector.

  • Very Sad but the headline should read “Tories Want To Buy Votes “

Something tells me this will never happen.
It can’t realistically stave off HPC and what council tenant will buy when the Daily Mail start whooping up the crash.
    Looks like a safe, vote-winning, near-cost-free press-release.

So this is basically the government giving you your deposit to buy a house that isn’t on the council estate. Isn’t that going to be eye wateringly expensive, giving say 10 to 15 grand to each family that may only stay in the house for a couple of years before taking the money and running? Sounds like a non-starter to me.

  • “home-owning democracy” it’s an illusion the banks really own the houses most people will never pay their mortgages off it’s just another scam to increase the number of debt slaves to the banks.

  • Exactly! If nothing else it demonstrates that this country has no viable opposition so does that mean we are slaves to Labour? Would this mean we are no longer living in a democracy but a dictatorship (albeit a more benevolent one than some). Are economic principles the same in democracies and dictatorships?

  • Cheers Tories! Anyone fancy giving me a handout to help me get on the housing ladder??? I live in private rented accommodation and am fairly stuck at the moment. Don’t see anyone rushing to help me out. More cr*p from the wannabe governments.

  • This might help HPI go even higher. Of course they will never get this into play in time. But it shows the economic sense the Tories have.

I used to be against labour, but when you read this crap about the conservatives, you realise what they truly are: vote whores.

Labour seems the slightly better of two very bad options. Unfortunately I don’t see it getting any better.

I would look into this and say that the Tories have been talking to housebuilders who can’t shift flats. They can use the government as a conduit for passing on a discount to those the government think are swing voters, shifting discounting around that would have to have had to be given anyway and had been passed onto BTL’rs who will no longer buy. So, the builder can’t find a BTL to shift onto (who they would have given a deposite, i.e. reduction), who were introduced previously by mortgage providers. So now, the government introduces families to builders from their preferred list, and the builder passes on a “discount” which appears to have been provided by government. It is the equivalent of a bribe or donation, and builders will expect to have input into planning policy, etc. as a result. The government may even require that the deposit is repayed at the point of sale, which would be a rip off and free money for them. Just goes to show how screwed up the Tory Party are.

    What a stupid idea.
Gordon Brown and his ‘i have looked after the economy so well’ misplaced smugness really needs better opposition than this.
There is generally an affordable housing shortage in this country that cannot really be denied.
But the fix for that is to let the open market adjust itself naturally. Which it always has done.
Its a shame that vote minded politicians are just too interested in their own skins just to come out and say prices are too high and they need to drop by a considerable amount.
Admit that it’s going to be painful but thats life.

Talking of Politicians did anyone hear George Bush telling American Troops yesterday that America is safer place now because of what they are doing in Iraq.
I almost choked on my coffee.
This Tory idea almost brought my breakfast up in much the same “WHAT ! are you talking about” fashion!

    Econocracy.

Where banks rule and everyone has to live by dictatorship of the numbers.

On the plus side, your economic vote does count – you can genuinely influence which entities live or die according to where you spend your money (votes). Of course, there is lobbying (advertising) and coercion (recession means you can only afford to buy from Tescos, they screw you and so you don’t have any cash left to spend in other shops and have to take out credit)

  • Anti-Christ? A little strong, but the way he gulps after every sentence makes him sound like a baddie off Doctor Who. I’m sure he is muttering ‘Doctor’ under his breathe…

Who? You are right and Brown is still making economic announcements due mainly to him not being an unconvincing PM.
Seriously though, when Brown became PM he obviously had a huge PR exercise planned. It would now appear the PR exercise is completed and they don’t know what to do next as Brown is rapidly starting to look like a combination of the chancellor and the invisible man. I find him completely unconvincing and without policies.

As for Cameron looking for votes Brown is no different, what with his peoples jurys. FFS.

  • It’s interesting that you see very little of Gordo on tv, somebody has obviously told him he’s old, ugly & Scottish so the less he appears in front of the public the better as it puts them off their tea.

Oh and apart from anything else why would any Council Tenant in their right mind give up the right to an affordable rent? My ex’s is about

£370 a month for a large 3 bed house. No Buildings insurance to pay. No maintenace costs. No worries about Interest rates.

And he suggests offering a 10% deposit on 200k house? so that the ‘tenant’ in question who wont be able to afford it anyway can pay a £1000 mortgage + pay all the maintenance costs and then worry about what the interest rates are doing.

Why would anyone swap a council house for that? It just does not make any sense at all.
I was amused to hear that they could only apply for this ‘idea’ if they had been good tenants for over 5 years lol.

I can just see all those, that are unreasonable idiots, suddenly all becoming model citizens because they might get the chance to have a £1000 mortgage in 5 years if they behave themselves! Prison doesn’t deter them – but a mortgage obviously will! LoL.

  • mrmickey. What is so bad about being scottish? Do remember GB is an east-coaster. The scots from the west have a great reputation for friendliness, so don’t judge us all by GB.
(hope I don’t get slammed by all the east-coasters now.)

  • Aah, I see your point. However, not all of us are happy with a slightly overweight, unattractive Scot running the Scottish parliament either, but we’ve got to put up with it, at least ’till the next election.

  • Double standards again with the Tories! They sprout on about leaving everything to market forces, then they come up with an idea that will distort the market.
