SPIRALLING house prices are forcing would-be buyers into desperate measures that will blight their lives for years to come.

Many people are borrowing up to seven times their salary, saddling themselves with crippling mortgage debts lasting up to 50 years.

Some are purchasing properties with strangers, using websites set up to link potential buyers unable to get on the property ladder on their own.

Others are borrowing from parents who either have to cash in their savings or put off retirement and re-mortgage their home.

One key way to end the madness is to provide more affordable rented housing.

And that is why the Mirror is leading a campaign to build thousands more council homes so increasingly desperate families can enjoy the security of a roof of their own over their heads.

Last night, Unison public sector union urged ministers to slap a windfall tax on the "exorbitant" profits of banks and oil companies - and use the cash to build more rented accommodation.

Calling on the Government to invest in council housing as well as building an extra 20,000 homes a year until 2011, leader Dave Prentis said: "Our members don't just see a housing ladder, they see a cliff face with no way up. What they want is decent, affordable rented accommodation."

The Chartered Institute of Housing urged 210,000 affordable homes to be built over the next three years, with priority given to first-time buyers and key workers.

First-time buyers are already a dying breed. They used to be half of all movers, now they are down to a third..... "

Exactly. Another union muppet. People don't want to rent, they want to buy. That's why they are desparately seeking the funds to do so. If they want to rent there are plenty of opportunities.

indeed, and aslong as people have this desire they will continue to buy. At any cost. While others will fall further and further behind. You gotta feel sorry for STRs etc. A long way to go I suspect. If at all.

Even murdering their parents to get at the inheritance? Or murdering the grandparents, so parents get inheritance, and then murder the parents to get everything? <_<

How about this FTB? In considerable debt yet can somehow provide a 10% deposit on a 140k house ? PS the clue is probably in the fact that they want a self-cert mortgage - lie to buy !

Sorry when the cheap credit runs out however hard you try you cannot buy at the current over-inlated prices. Cheap credit is disappearing . Asset bubble next.

Deja Vu its amazing how history repeats itself we had "DESPERATE HOUSEBUYERS" in the headlines in 1988, yes priced out of the market, commuting long distances, houses unaffordable, need to build more. Then the headlines changed in the early 90s to "DESPERATE HOUSESELLERS".

I think its the reason we have BOOM and BUST so everyone can hop off on and off at some time.

I am wandering if the newspapers are reading over old newspaper articles. I am awaiting the new headlines with glee "HOUSETRAP MISERY".

A few more 0.25% interest rate hikes should get the party going as its already started.

This is my biggest bug bear.

People calling for more social housing, ok, when that's built will the developers go on to build more schools? families rarely have just one child, then they need doctors, hospitals, dentists, prisons, care homes, child care services roads, sewage I could be here all day, will they then fund it all?

Even then it won't go to the most needy, it's not a cliche teenagers getting pregnant to get to the top of the list, while honest hardworking people wait decades, if it were first come first served it would be a much better system, if they know they had to wait their turn it would be a very different story

The death of aspiration. So you've got your degree and your 30k wage, what next? A house? A secure family unit? Forget it. Now who'd have thought there would come a time when a combined salary of 50k couldn't realistically afford a humble family home or when a single professional salary couldn't buy half a terrace house?

Still, there can only be no solution. We must take in more Eastern European men with cropped haircuts and more Eastern European ladies who look like porn sluts. Vive le Revolution!
