0q0 Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 As forecast, used car prices are way up at the dealerships. They have a shortage of used stock. Fact. Friend of mine's been in this afternoon waving notes in their face, they've got nothing sub £5K under 5 to 6 yrs old. For £5K you'd have got a bite this time last year, you'd actually have had plenty of choice of the more basic models. They today stated that auction prices have soared, and they're short of stock. And they proved it by having nothing to offer across all their London/SE dealerships at that price. They couldn't get rid of him out the showroom fast enough. Simply £5K buys 0 now. I know from my own experience at a well-known London car supermarket that 05 cars are more expensive now generally than they were last summer for the same trim and miles. How long's this going to be the case I wonder? Not good news for me either as I have to get another car by the summer, absolutely no choice in that. Deflation ?

olliegog Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 the car dealers definately do not want your money! - a true story - prospective buyer goes into a main dealer interested in a car on at 4995 pounds (reduced from 5299 for the weekend ) - nothing special 37K miles underpowered MPV - having done his research he offers 4200 and is prepared to go up to to 4500 (i.e. ten percent off). Salesman not interested, furious clicking on his calculator, says he will talk to his manager and phone back. Not a word from them and the car sold the next week. What is going on - car factories whining poverty and asking for help and buying a good used car seems to be getting more difficult. I am sure if you go in with a trade in of a car you will be given a derisory allowance.
0q0 Posted March 23, 2009 Author Posted March 23, 2009 (edited) Thanks for the replies, chaps. Renterbob, where art thou? Hate to say it Bob, but I told you so. Certainly not fizzled out yet, even 2 months on... http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/news/item.htm?id=5642 And if the dealers are bluffing, it's a bl00dy odd bluff to send my friend away carless when he was ready to buy on the spot. Oh TLB...this old chestnut...you posted a similar thread a few weeks ago and I found some VERY cheap deals for you after a 2 min web search. You said you were gonna check them out. How did you find them? There was a thread here a few days ago about BMW dealers buying all stocks etc to the the prices up. Give it time, they're hoping all the freshly printed Freddy Reddies are coming their way courtesy of yours truly (the Taxpayers of the United Kingdom). There are still some EXCELLENT deals about. Again gimme the make and model, mileage and tear and I'll beat any deal your crazy 92 quid admin fee, ahem well know car supermarket CarGiant can muster. They used to have decent meals there....I suspect that's even gone downhill. Maybe we should wait for the Nano?
0q0 Posted March 23, 2009 Author Posted March 23, 2009 two words, bull trap.average car prices will get whooped over the next few years and it's got fu** all to do with anything but unemployment. I genuinely can't see why you're excited.Stocks are up,even banking stocks, will it stop them becoming insolvent?no.I'll believe in rising car p[rices when they start slashing some production and i don't mean athousand jobs in brum,I mean 50% worldwide cuts ie GM/Chrysler/Ford going under. Hello TR, thanks for posting. Sadly this is how it is at the moment, and I've just checked the supermarket website - not only is their stock much lower than last year (of Nissans anyway) but the prices are all up. As I reported to Bob last year, there were queues for test drives and plenty of people at the lot there. They have had the last laugh as the same year of car is now up in price by a lot. We can but hope this is a bull trap. I agree, it should be, but factors such as people shunning new cars suggests it might not be. If scrappage comes in then it might all change, although I think scrappage will be a gimmick if the manufacturers or dealerships up cars by best part of £2K anyway!

renterbob Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 I initially liked honestJohn, but IMO he hasn't been honest for a few years. Sorry, but that's my opinion, he became too big and sold out IMO. I don't blame him, maybe I'd do the same if some bigwig offered me a gazzillion reddies.

They were 300 miles away, older models, sold before you can phone up. I'm not going to Cargiant, it's too expensive, but they're still probably cheaper than most. That's the scary thing. Also, few buyers at forecourts, staff are doing nothing much. So - cars too expensive and the useds are scarce. Stalemate. Let's talk reality now. Get in your Aston and do the legwork like I have (on the bus in my case) - there's nothing about except at Arfur Daley style lots. Go check numerous other threads on here from other posters, they'll tell you the same. Story, end of. Enjoy your supper, best regards, TLB.

Adjustable seats, Adjustable steering column/wheel, Air conditioning, Central Not only am I 99.9% sure they're sold because I know how fast AutoTrader cars sell, but last year for the equivalent age you'd have paid less most likely. The 05 plate Almeras listed further down are the same price they were last year at CG for that age, yet here we are nearly a year on and they're not down, but they're static. They should be £500 less. 0q0 Posted March 24, 2009 Author Posted March 24, 2009 Ford announced today upping prices on new, yet again. I think that makes 8% up in 12 months. Residuals probably up with that.
torquay lookout Posted March 24, 2009 Posted March 24, 2009 Not sure of my facts, but I been told that auction value of cars, vans, and even Gordo's 'tractors' are up, due to the exchange rate! exports to southern Ireland, and any other country that use R/H drive vehicles are now very cheap to buy in UK. I guess we'll be the ones who end up using 3rd world horse and carts, Gordo you've played a blinder, thanks alot. RiG could be correct a poker player located in ireland hadnt been around for few days anyway he was playing today ,he said he had just back from the uk where he had brought a car.
SNACR Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 I've been seeing loads or car transporters on the roads loaded up with onecarcone.com hire vehicles, I presume, on the way to the auctions. I think I read they had a 15,000 vehicle fleet so I'd expect that to put a bit of downward pressure on auction prices.

contractor Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 I see 1car1 went into admin last week. Sooner or later all of their cars will be hitting the auctions bigtime. I wonder what that will do to prices of 1yr old motors?

Peter Skellan Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 Prices are very very definitely up and by quite an amount. Just three weeks before Christmas I had a BMW main dealer offer me a 55 plate 320d SE Touring with a few options & sports seats and 77k miles, new tyres, prep'd and serviced and one year additional BMW warranty for £9,700. I walked when he wouldn't buckle to my £9,500. Silly boy. That would be a grand up now. 530d's have gone up 10% in 2 months. Ford Mondeo 2.2 TDCi's the same. Facelift Focus haven't lost a penny since New Year. I bought my boy a Toyota Avensis estate from Cargiant in Nov for just under £5k and I don't think he's lost a penny on it yet. Its all rather odd. I know that motorbike values have gone up because people are riding them to Euroland and selling them and then catching a flight back. The 30% Euro-Sterling move means British bikes are cheap to Euro buyers... Same thing is happening with shotguns. But our cars are wrong hand drive so I can't imagine the same dynamic is at work - is it?
Emy74 Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 A friend wanted to buy a BMW 1 series. Saw one up for £10K. Glasses guide was £9750 Parkers £8700 and What car £8900. Salesman would not budge from the forcourt price. Used the argument that they could not get any used cars and that Glasses used prices had been going up since December. He did not say why but the best deal he could do was to throw in a tank of Petrol. I suspect the person I know would have paid £9500 but salesman did not want to know. I supect that as new cars are not selling no one is part exchanging.
