80 jobs to be axed at mail order firm

EIGHTY jobs are being axed by a Church mail order company following a dip in home shopping.

The news comes just weeks after two other Hyndburn companies announced more than 160 job losses.

Express Gifts, Henry Street, employs over 1,400 people and a spokesman said the losses were due to a slowdown in growth in the home shopping market.

Council shock as 120 apply for four jobs

About 120 hopefuls have applied for just four new jobs as council workmen after Ludlow Town Council decided it wanted its own labour force to look after its parks and cemeteries.

Ludlow Mayor Councillor Graeme Kidd said the unprecedented response had followed the authority’s search for a four-strong direct labour force. “It’s absolutely staggering,” he said.

Jobs blow as factory sets April close date

OVER 150 workers are facing the dole queue as escalating energy costs have been blamed for the closure of a Cambois factory.

Management at Vald Birn UK say a 100 per cent rise in the cost of electricity is one of the main reasons the decision has been made to close the iron foundry in April with the loss of 157 jobs.

More than 100 staff have been made redundant from a Nottingham-based shop fitting company. Fitzroy Timber Tailors, based at Radford Court, Ilkeston Road, Nottingham, and its subsidiary Timber Systems Ltd, have gone into administration.

Unions fear almost 140 workers at a wiring firm are at risk of losing their jobs as part of a proposed factory closure.

Officials at Amicus say Volex Ionix, the specialist wiring harness and woven systems division of Volex Group, is moving its Stoke-on-Trent operations to its existing Manchester factory in a bid to reduce costs.

Devon County Council is to axe the jobs of 40 senior managers in social services as it faces a crippling £15 million budget deficit.

The council revealed yesterday that it is to axe nearly half of its staff of social services area managers.

80 Jobs Facing Axe At Factory

UP to 80 jobs will be lost when part of famous Burnley firm Burco Dean shuts down in March.

Workers in the electric blanket production facility in Langham Street were told the shock news on Friday by chief executive Mr Rob Colquitt.

He said: "The decision is a result of a further decline in the UK market for electric blankets, coupled with continued competition from the Far East."
