Where does this nonsense end. Just how much money can you be spending on petrol? I doubt you pay even 1000 quid in fuel tax per year, so it is interesting you are complaining bitterly about this minor tax and not about the various income taxes that surely cost you much more. If you don't completely lose it every time you see the letters PAYE on a payslip, why get worked up about a tax that is barely noticeable in the greater scheme of things, easy to collect, hard to avoid, helps ration a scarce resource (road space), and reduces the reliance on imported oil?
