  1. All way West from 'The Hams' to Colyton/Colyford near Seaton. Also looked up as far as tiverton but the schools near there weren't all that good. Great grammar near Colyton. Also Poole area has a surprising selection of good schools, Bruton too. We're selling up here and renting next to a good school before we go and look for a plot of land somewhere near one of these places. I like the Hams the best, with one of the best beaches in the UK nearby. friend moved down to Devon from South east a few years back and loves it, he actually looks healthier from less stress and the kids are doing well.
  2. But pre 1999 loans are linked. which means the value of the debt is diminishing this year. Train tickets will also reduce slightly next year for season tickets for the same reason...
  3. Dont really give a fig as long as the debt repays itself before 25 years (or another 18 years). Quids in at the end of the day unless you believe prices will fall for a further 18 years...
  4. One of my BTL's has come down in price form £1100 pm to just under £300 pm Means an extra £800 pm off the debt. Cracking deal pegged to the base rate. I hope this recession lasts a little while longer..
  5. ...and is this worse than the alternatives? I want my children to look at chavs and be thankful they don't have to mix with them. I'd rather there be a class system than have to be socially aligned with most of the miscreants I see around today. Would I like my child bringing any of these fecks to our house on a play date? NFW. We have had to vet some of her friends from school as it is. Don't want her to see life as seen from some of the families, or single mothers, of the children at her new school. Have you really had a look see at what these people think is functional? It's OK to be aspirational, it's ok to be middle class, it's ok to think of yourself as more socially mobile than people. Utopian deams have a habit of turning into faustian nightmares Wrap them in cottom wool? Nah, silk, yes, expensive Cotton yes, not cotton wool though, that would be silly.
  6. No they did, I have seen a letter form them which indicated the rate. This was for pre 1999 loans.
  7. South Devon have cracking schools and the prices are coming right down. we're moving once we've sold our houses round here.
  8. Ah., once again misquoting. what I said was that all grads should, after 10 years in their chosen profession, earn over £30k, but don't let facts get in the way of a good old guffaw. Pre 1999 loans are actualy not acruing interest this year, and I'd say next year as well. Also, if you make it to 50, the debt gets wiped aparently. So good for mature students.
  9. I hope so, I have 3 kitchens to refurb and replace shortly...
  10. Just checked this weekend and Watercolour prices up.
  11. disingenious ot quote me as saying 100k I actually said 30k plus and I stand by it. 10 years as a professional in a non, what I would term worthy, position, then, I think yes, that could be construed as failure in what you're doing. If you've got yourself a shiny degree, done 10 years groundwork in a professional capacity, then you're just kidding yourself that you've tried hard and that's my point. I am sitting here, racking my brain thinking of an industry that wouldn't fit the criteria
  12. Thats kind of you to say; thanks. The car thing, well, it could possibly be just the school, but I felt money was a big thing there from the get go. My wife is not the type of woman to get dressed up for anything outside of our wedding and it really did feel like she was being frowned upon whenever she took her to school. That much, I believe, was not imagined. Not really an issue for us, we're not the types to really care what others are like, but to young girls it wasn't great. No, she'll get a good education whether thats in a gramm or private; it will be one or the other. it's a shame the deducation system has got like this, but there you go.
  13. one of my nephews earns £20k a year delivering parts in the Lake district. His house cost him 80k (3 Bed semi) which he'd traded up form a 1 bed flat in Wiltshire (£55k). he said he was trading up in lifestyles and down in career (he was a factory manager). The lab techie I know, works in the Pharm industry and his wife works as a sales rep for the same company and they earn well over £120k combined. He's fairly senior, but the point is the same, if you are a graduate professional, possibly missed out the graduate part originally but thought that a given, and are in your 30's, intimating 10 years in the industry, then if you're not on 30k+ or doing something worthy, I still stand on my belief that you're not all that good at your job and have stood still. I'd say this was apparent in all industries. I was recruited from Uni straight to 25k outside of London. Within 5 years of leaving Uni I was earning 38k, within 10 years a lot more... All of the professionals I know are on 45+, all people I know in IT are on 55k+ and all contractors I know are on 90+ I once knew a contractor who was on £1750 a day. He now lives in Limoges aged 45.
  14. OK, I'll start. Please tell me what is not worthy about being a nurse, paramedic, teacher? Lecturer? I think all of those would be deemed, worthy. I know of a few lab techies who've spent 10 years in the pharmaceutical industry who earn a fortune. what, possibly, I could have made it clearer by saying anyone degree educated person who is in their 30's are either doing something worthy of not doing some thing well... Hang on...
  15. We're moving to Devon for the schools and to get out and away form the SE. We'll hopefully get into some of the grams down there which are very high up the ofsted reports and if not, go back private. I must admit, this was my first foray into PE and my wife was wholeheartedly against it so it was not a good time to be me. I think it upset the daughter as well that she couldn't do the things her school mates could. In all honesty, her best friend, at the time, and since, has always been this girl who goes to a terrible school. One thing I have noted, from this, is that terrible schools on special measures seem to have an inordinately large amount of cash lavished on them... I like cars; it's my sole area of weakness.
  16. I was bullish, but not any more. I was imagining the market levelling off, not rising and rising scares me a little... the value of substitution is just one of the ploys and if there are 2 people of similar skills in one company, that works anyway. However, there are other ways and means to almost render IR35 redundant in any situation, but to these people, it doesn't apply to them and their company. Where is the company based? What sort of laws does that compay employ you on. There are ways to buy an OTS company in the Isle of Man which would allow you to take 85% of income as non repayable loans. If you talk to the right people, there are ways to shelve paying tax altogether. I recall a contract I held in Germany in which I was regarded as non domiciled but domiciled; it meant I could earn money there, but pay no tax on it and avoid tax in the UK. It was the most profitable 2 years of my life given the contract was negotiated in euros, by me, and pounds, by them; they thought I was a hard bargainer, I thought they were being tight. Quite comical in the end and 100% tax free... Honestly, there are so many ways of avoiding tax, legitimately, that there is no reason to try and be silly about it. You can circumvent any IR35 with a clever contract and savvy accountants, but always with 2 or more employees of the company; you both have to be seen to be bringing something to the table...
  17. Precisely what I'll be doing, but in a different location. Have been reading with great interest all sides of the debate and trying to work out the maths myself, but it's just not sitting right. I believe it has got to be done by next may as Mssr. Brown and the other crooks will be doing all they can to turn this around and that means more debt for us all. Selling all my properties and moving to Devon to keep my head down in a nice rental for a while.
  18. I just recall reading an article saying their base was around £35. I also remember reading tube drivers are on 40k plus 40 days holiday... I am not too sure the ONS is doing it's job right; sure that's got to be a headline hasn't it? Gov Dept not fulfilling their remit...
  19. I may add, that I am quite bullish about the market, or was. I have been watching with interest and trying my hardest to get my head around the science behind all this (and not really getting it) but all of my houses are going on the market once we return from holiday. I am always considerd as an optimist, but the maths behind all of this are not right and that is an area I am good at. I cannot see any way out of this which is good...
  20. Just remember there are two of them, working in central London for banks now. I am not 100% sure of the rates, but I know they have turned down roles for £700 in the past, so would assume they are closer to £1000 a day.
  21. The 74 and 60 are after equalisation which sounded shady to me... I think those earning 60+ would be not as low as 7% and definitely not as high as 20%. I took this as household earnings, which is why I baulked, but I do tend to believe that across the country, 75K is not all that uncommon for middle aged, middle class people. If you look at Policemen, train drivers, tanker drivers (road variety) are all on around £35k and more and they are not in an area of employment deemed specialised, or indeed, highly trained. I also do tend to look at this regionally. I know junior civil servants who with 12 years under their belts (they are not that motivated or career minded) can hoover up £35k. Most middle managers I know are on 50+, this is all all South West. Due to the nature of my work, I also tend to work with a lot of IT professionals which does skew my peer group somewhat; I am yet to meet an IT pro on less than 45k in SE and the contractors are all on £400+ a day (~100kpa+). If I were to sit here and write down details of all of my friends, their household incomes would all be in excess of 80k all the way to around 250k and there's no blagging, that's a genuine appraisal. I know in the West country of a someone in the IT profession for years only earning £25k in a cushy number. His wife is a PA to some chap and earns 28k. I think the figures are low in the ONS, to be frank, and something not sitting right.
  22. Bought in Surb, sold in 2001, moved to tolworth, sold in 2001, moved to Esher, sold in 2002; still made heaps and it's got worse. Knew it was time to move when a 2 bed basement flat in our square was sold for £275k when we bought ours for £112k but yes, it's all relative.
  23. Not really, all I know is there some kind of equalisation going on so take sinto account the kind of person and house before reducing the amount it actually earns thus for some households, their household income is up to 40% less than 74k. It's all a bit too much for me, I knew anecdotal evidence from my peer group and families peer group and only just started to research it when the figs just didn't sit right. I'd actuallt put the average household income as above 75k for 20% of the population. I also found out that dividends aren't included in the figures, as they sit ina grey area between investments and earnings. Genuinely not my intention to insult btw.
  24. It wasn't meant as an insult, I call my ids monkeys when they're messing around. But, fair play, if you took it as an insult, I apologise.
