Seems inevitable that there will be job losses if the Lloyds takeover goes ahead.

Does anyone know how many jobs HBOS has in Edinburgh??

Must be the end of their new headquarters in Fountainbridge?

Where is Lloyds??

Must have a -ve effect on house prices in the untouchable city!

I saw the STV news at 6 tonight; I think they said that HBoS had 14,000 employees in Scotland, but they didn't say how many of them were in Edinburgh. One interesting thing they said was that if the merged bank wanted to continue issuing their own banknotes in Scotland then they were legally obliged to have their headquarters here.

They also talked to an unfortunate guy who'd retired from the Bank of Scotland after working for them for 35 years or so. He said that most of his retirement funds were in the form of HBoS shares which were worth £12.50 last year, but were down to 86p yesterday. Not so good.

I hope the lovely new Bank of Scotland banknotes don’t disappear! I’m so fond of them that I actually find it painful to spend them, and I’m always annoyed if an HBOS machine gives me the grotty old notes.

Mind you, if I can get a nice flat for a sensible price because there isn’t a load of bankers bidding up the prices, I could probably live with ugly banknotes.

What is it with all the bank notes up here in Scotland? I had £50 in my wallet the other day, all tenners and all different?!?!?!? admittedly 2 of em were English notes. Bank of Scotland, Clydesdale Bank and there was another? all worth the same but usually not accepted south of the border, why can't we just have British notes????

Sorry rant over, but it is a little pointless, no?

Old pie muchin' Salmond was a bit grumpy today. :P

Good ol' Scottish Financial shrewness...NOT. Oh dear Edinburgh is proving to be highly exposed to the worlds financial events after all, in fact it is bordering on pornographic.

Can't imagine how he must be feeling at the moment. 35 years working for a bank and he had most of his retirement fund in one pot. A rather ironic tale in current times.

I do sympathise though....a hard lesson learn't a little too late.

Gee, well that is going to swing it then

How many jobs were lost when Halifax merged with the BOS?

What happened with the HQs then?

So on Newsnight Scotland Bill Jamieson (of the Scotsman) said that HBoS has 17,000 employees in Scotland, 4,000 of them in Edinburgh. The presenter also said that the TImes was reporting that the merged bank will be called Lloyds Halifax, and its headquarters will be in London.

I may add that the first 5 seconds of the national version of Newsnight were hilarious.

Damn! It's not on the iPlayer version. They showed an HBoS advert with one of their employees dancing out of a bank singing "Woke up this morning feeling fine." and then Paxman broke in and snarled "NO YOU DIDN'T!". You had to be there.

It seems a bit early in the day for them to already know how many jobs they're going to cut and where, but then how long has this been planned for?

In any case, I'd suspect there to be more losses down south, if they actually want to keep HBOS a going concern north of the border. Most of the stuff that could be centralised was done so already by expanding the Halifax facilities and closing the BoS ones. What's left north of the border are mainly branches and their support gear. IT, for example, was all centralised in Leeds in 2002.

If they're really cutting that many jobs in Scotland, they're closing a hell of a lot of branches, which doesn't make much sense as Lloyds has very few in Scotland.

I guess we'll see.
