Badger
My partner & I spent 3 years helping a friend run his country retreat, which gave us an interesting insight into the world of live-in staff at these big places. In 'The Lady' magazine there are some real gems of opportunities for people wishing to save money. Some places offer free accomodation for a few hours work a week, with one partner able to continue in their own career, and thereby save a deposit for example. We worked 4 days a week each & earnt about £10k each, but had no rent, council tax or utilities to pay on our lovely 1 bed maisonette in the grounds of an amazing historical estate. Worth a look as an alternative to living back with the folks IMO, if you've got any skills to offer like gardening, cooking, driving, DIY, security, pet care, child care etc. We considered moving into this field but decided that doing it for someone we didn't know wouldn't suit us, so we resumed our original careers. Badger
I was surprised at how many places DO stock it, I swear Viz get their 'Top Tips' and spoof ads inspiration from it, it's so old fashioned as to be quite entertaining. Guest X-QUORK
That conjours images of the transvestite from Little Britain asking his local newsagent for a copy of The Lady, because "I'm a lady don't you know?!"
