I have to admit that even though I hate cities and I get nervous surrounded by loads of people I don't know, I would love to go to Japan. I'd love to check out all the sushi bars. The Japanese that I have met at conferences have always been very polite and they really seem to appreciate it when you try to be very polite and helpful back. Admirable qualities I think. Not that I actually know, just an impression I get.

I'm sure you wouldn't be disappointed by Japan. There are some travel agencies that specialise in putting together packages for Japan - they'll craft an itinerary and sort out all of your travel connections etc, and they'll do it more cheaply than if you did it yourself because of the favourable rates they get.

Japan is much better value for money than many people think too. Where else could you drink unlimited cocktails with a stunning view of Tokyo for ten quid?

Play your cards right and you might meet a white male who's suave, highly educated and pulling in a 6 figure salary.

US dollars - just got a 20,000USD summer bonus actually. Lubbly jubbly

What exactly are english teachers bonuses based on?

Tokyo is full of fantasist westerner immigrants / expats reinventing themselves; I'm sure you're fitting in just right.

Skinty: I can't recommend Tokyo highly enough, it's an amazing city; apart from accommodation it's a lot cheaper than most people expect and the people, food and shopping are amazing. Customer service of all minds is second to none too.

I've always been fascinated by those sleep pods they have. Has anyone ever used one?

It's a fantastic place to go - I was there for part of my PhD and a couple of postdocs, and am constantly looking for excuses/funding to go again. I'm off there again soon.

:D:D:D

Nope. It may come as a surprise to a Japan-failure like you, but there are plenty of other jobs and careers for westerners in Japan other than English teaching. Try again.

As for Charisma man - sure, why not? Would you turn down top notch pussy offered on a plate?

Sorry, 'top notch pussy' is not a term a man of character would use. Very tasteless.

No, was tempted to once just for a laugh but not sure I could deal with the claustrophobia

Hotels in Tokyo are second to none, I stay at the Park Hyatt when I feel like treating myself (where they filmed lost in translation) which is great and even average business hotels like The Cerulean Towers have amazing service and pretty top notch rooms.

The idea of Love hotels make me feel a little queasy tho.

surprisingly non claustrophobic. I have a little sink, a tv, and even space for a full sized suitcase, all in 1 m x 1 m x 2 m.

The main problem I found was the noise of the drunken salarymen. Even in the pod it is quite loud. As with your temptation, I tried it once to see what it was like, and probably wouldn't do it again.

The Dai-Ichi Seafort Hotel's worth a look. A bit businessy but one of the best views in Tokyo if you're on the bay side.
