  1. Did you know that England has a higher population density than both India and Japan.
  2. Features: - 4 walls - roof - super small piece of land - Bog standard average house, nothing high tech. - An hour commute to London I value this property at around £130k to £150k
  3. University professors teach future software engineers, not school teachers. School teachers teach really basic stuff.
  4. What I find absolutely amazing is how a teacher can earn the same as an software engineer in the UK: Software engineer (£32k): http://www.payscale.com/research/UK/Job=Software_Engineer/Salary School teacher (£29k): http://www.payscale.com/research/UK/Job=High_School_Teacher/Salary Surely the software engineer is much higher skilled. In the USA: Software engineer ($75k) http://www.payscale.com/research/US/Job=Software_Engineer/Salary School teacher ($45k): http://www.payscale.com/research/US/Job=High_School_Teacher/Salary In the UK, working for the state is definitely the way to go.
  5. World purchasing power index map, Darker green is better: http://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/gmaps.jsp?indexToShow=getPurchasingPowerInclRentIndex Depends on your specific skills however. USA, Germany, Australia and Switzerland look fairly good.
  6. Very interesting. GPs in the UK earn around £65k on average, much more than engineers: http://www.payscale.com/research/UK/Job=General_Practitioner/Salary But in Germany GPs only earn EUR43k (£34k), much less than engineers http://www.payscale.com/research/DE/Job=Physician_%2f_Doctor%2c_General_Practice/Salary I guess this is why engineers go into investment banking in the UK.
  7. Yikes. If you are not working at an investment bank or similar, then don't bother with London.
  8. Eh, no. I have worked at many different engineering companies in the UK. In London the ratio is 50/50 British/Foreign and in the rest of England it is around 80/20. Eastern European engineers are very rare. Asian engineers are more common, but they often have poor English skills so we cannot hire them.
  9. Senior Mechanical Engineer - UK £39.5k http://www.payscale.com/research/UK/Job=Senior_Mechanical_Engineer/Salary Senior Electrical Engineer - UK £39.6k http://www.payscale.com/research/UK/Job=Senior_Electrical_Engineer/Salary Senior Cival Engineer - UK £37.3k http://www.payscale.com/research/UK/Job=Senior_Civil_Engineer/Salary Senior Mechanical Engineer - GER EUR59k - £46.8k (18% higher than UK) http://www.payscale.com/research/DE/Job=Senior_Mechanical_Engineer/Salary Senior Electrical Engineer - GER EUR61.3k - £48.6k (22.7% higher than UK) http://www.payscale.com/research/DE/Job=Senior_Electrical_Engineer/Salary Senior Cival Engineer - GER EUR49k - £39k (3.5% higher) http://www.payscale.com/research/DE/Job=Senior_Civil_Engineer/Salary So on average, Salaries in Germany are around 14.7 % higher for engineers than in the UK, however, you have to remember than UK companies have to pay around 13% employers national ensurance. Taking that into account, salaries are around the same.
  10. How many jobs were created in the same time period? A lot of these companies sack and hire people at the same time. It is a lot like having a bowel cleanse.
  11. I think that is the reason they are coming here. Work a couple of years, save up money, then buy a house cash back home.
  12. True, but the system will still require humans. I am a big fan of computerising the diagnosis of diseases, it should get rid of a lot of human errors made by doctors.
  13. You can get a tent for less than a hundred. Shelter sorted. Oh wait, I don't think the planning office will allow a tent.
  14. Something in medicine where the government pays your salary. Lets say GP, surgeon, nurse, dentist, etc. Plus you are cashing in on the population getting older. Ka-ching.
  15. No matter how much they charge, you cannot turn a rock into a diamond.
  16. I have seen this video before. I think they are trying to be a bit controversial with that statement. The truth is that it is not too difficult to predict the future need for a certain job. There is an excellent website for researching careers: http://www.bls.gov/ooh/computer-and-information-technology/computer-systems-analysts.htm It has for every job an "Future Outlook" section where is discusses what the potential future demand is going to be for a specific occupation. Unfortunately it is for the US.
  17. A good place to start is to look at the official UK skills shortage list: https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/308513/shortageoccupationlistapril14.pdf Higher salaries are a good indication that the skills are in higher demand too. One thing to keep in mind is where you want to live. Some jobs require you to live in specific areas, such as in big cities only (for example investment banker), etc. Hairdressers are not in short supply since pay is only £14k a year. http://www.payscale.com/research/UK/Job=Hairdresser/Hourly_Rate Marketing is also not in short supply: http://www.payscale.com/research/UK/Job=Marketing_Assistant/Salary Nursing does seem to be in shorter supply: http://www.payscale.com/research/UK/Job=Registered_Nurse_%28RN%29/Salary
  18. There is a disconnect between what skills are needed and what skills students are learning at university. Students need to look at what skills are needed before they decide what they are going to study. I did this and it has worked out quite well for me.
  19. The below properties are what you can get where my parents are currently living (retired). Unfortunately houses are so cheap there, that getting one house for £325k is not possible, so you can get any 3 of the below houses for the same price as 1 in Bath: The below houses are around £100k each: http://www.property24.com/for-sale/durbanville/durbanville/western-cape/9520/102036278?Branded=true http://www.property24.com/for-sale/durbanville-country-estate/durbanville/western-cape/9510/101830429?Branded=true http://www.property24.com/for-sale/the-crest/durbanville/western-cape/9554/101909578?Branded=false http://www.property24.com/for-sale/welgevonden-estate/durbanville/western-cape/9574/101945846?Branded=true http://www.property24.com/for-sale/sonstraal-heights/durbanville/western-cape/9550/102077567?Branded=true
