Xurbia
Brilliant. The NHS is both incompetent and smug. Edit: And I guess we pay about the same as you for it. Annual budget of around £100bn/year, divided by 20 million private sector workers = £5,000/year/worker. So, as a couple, we pay around £10,000/year for it. We are planning to start a family, and we are scared of using the NHS for pre-natal care (minimal and not even by doctors, much less by obstetricians), and birth ( I heard mid-wives do this too, but I still can't believe that. Middle-ages?!). A Russian roulette game. We are going to research private care, but even that here is seriously damaged by the lack of competition for quality country-wide, due to the NHS, unlike in the US. I went to my GP regarding pain in my hands. I used to climb rock and mountaineer every weekend, so it was really bad news. The GP took one look and said I had tendonitis. I told her it couldn't be. This overweight doctor told me that she had experienced tendonitis after carrying heavy bags and that's what it probably was! I've worked out my whole life with weights and know what tendonitis feels like. I also explained my hands felt hot and cold and had a history of neck pain. She told me it was most likely rheumotoid arthritis. I had blood taken and it wasn't arthritis so she said it was just wear and tear and part of getting old (I was 35 and very fit - I had just hiked from the bottom of the Grand Canyon with a 60pound pack in a couple of hours). She said that there was nothing more the NHS could do. I could wait 6 months to see a specialist for MRI or pay to go private. I went to a Seattle sports doctor. They took X-rays within 10 minutes of my arrival. The doctor told me that the bilateral pain was caused by neck problems, probably because of a serious car accident years ago. He said it was a simple diagnosis and was disgusted at the NHS. 60 minutes later I was being shown the exact exercises to build up the supporting muscles around the neck, in the same building, using a fully kitted out gym! I haven't had problems since. I do 100 pull-ups everytime I go to LA-fitness. The US doctors are worth every single cent to me. The NHS is a joke and not least because of crap GPs. They didn't even know until I told them I could feel air coming in from where my tooth used to be! They had to take me back in the operating room. ...went to the doctor after smashing my toe. They told me that I could wait a year and hobble or go private. I was forced to go private and then bought my own insurance. Good old NHS.
