  1. Conveniently ignoring the fact that most people now shop in American style undercover malls. When we went to the Trafford Centre a few weeks ago it was like Christmas shopping had started early - they had opened the OVERFLOW, overflow car park !

While I was keeping toodlers entertained in the Apple store, there were people buying Mac books, Ipads and phones like crazy. Even the crappy food hall was busy and there were small queues to get a table at places like Cafe Rouge

  2. My ideal voting system for general elections would be a single list for the entire country which anybody could put themselves on for free. There would be no official constituencies.

Every voter would have one vote to give to the candidate who they feel best represents their views. It would be the responsibility of voters to do their own research and figure out who this is.

Candidates would upload manifestos to the list so that voters could see what they stand for. Candidates would be free to claim to represent a certain geographical area, ethnicity, religion, political party, age group, profession, economic philosophy, or anything they want.

At the end of the election the 500 candidates with the most votes would form the next Parliament.

In parliamentary votes, each MP would cast a number of votes equal to the number of votes they received in the general election.

One small problem with your plan...

...Simon Cowell would be Prime Minister, with David Beckham as Chancellor

  3. There are plenty of viewings whch are nothing more than a day out for the viewers...

    Guilty.

Wife's off work at the moment and whilst we need to move in the next 18 months (at latest) due to family size, I have no intention of doing it right now. However, if we see a potential property, the missus will visit just to gauge size, value, condition etc to manage our expectations when we do take the plunge.

What we are amazed at is the quality of "estate agent" taking us round - quite often someone in their 60's+ who quite frankly is on the slippery slope to dementia. Last month the EA was actively pointing out the faults with the property !! (some of which, like storage space, my wife hadn't even noticed)

  4. I'm going to regret this but do your worst on this: http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-21555909.html

    I'll start with,

    1) all bedrooms too small

    2) next to a school

    3) north facing garden

    4) nagging doubts about the urban road area - the identical fixtures on the terraces lead me to think social housing and the chalet style bungalows, wtf?

Being led to let my wife make what she thinks is a low offer just so that she can get it out of her system, i'm worried that such a "brave" plan might back fire on me.

My tuppenth worth... it's a real bargain for Alty and that in itself should set the alarm bells ringing. The area is WEIRD! A mix of old biddy flats, DHS, and potential cannabis dealers. I'm sure in reality it is a perfectly respectable place to live, but my God, it is missing a soul, a heartbeat, call it what you will.

Everyday I would wake up expecting to look out of the window and see Sue Pollard in a yellow blazer, organising a knobbly knees contest.

  5. Ok, don't know why I am offering this out to you sharp-eyed hawks, but look at this beauty that's just appeared on the market...

    RightMove

Some great lines on the home page...

UNMISSABLE OPPORTUNITY..The house exudes character and charm...great potential to create a luxury Bathroom with all the trimmings!... VIEWING ESSENTIAL TO FULLY APPRECIATE
  6. Adding to this...

Brooklands - is there anything there? Beyond the tram and some decent schools, but any shops/pubs/cafes etc, or are you reliant on the few in Timp or Sale/Alty?

Unless your idea of a good night is 4 pints of Stella and some fish n chips - in a word, no. But with the metro this isn't really a problem... 20 mins say into Manchester.

  7. Best is saved till the end...

Their house is now worth £325,000, but they don’t want to sell. Instead they will extend their mortgage term until they receive a windfall from a relative.

‘We will just keep paying our mortgage until we receive our inheritance,’ says Mr Dixon, a retired teacher who became a mortgage adviser.

Kicking the can down the road, until Uncle Jack kicks the bucket.

    What a despicably grasping, self-centred, short-sighted individual.

He should excel in his new career.

  8. And then this just listed. A 2 bed mid terrace for 450k....

    http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-37504640.html

ffs. It's these listings that make people think that anything cheaper is 'a bargain'...

I see your "2 bed terrace" and raise you a bungalow "which needs updating" for "offers over £500K"

    Mum needs a bungalow

I've studied the pictures carefully and I can't see any sign of life after 1984. Probably some greedy inheritance sale...

  9. This one?

    http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-37284431.html

Pleasant house and looks to be in decent order but I think it's really a bit too far down Oldfield Rd. There's some rather 'odd' houses down there with those 'prefab' bungalows etc. Quite a hike into Alty too but good for walking into Dunham along the canal. Back towards John Leigh park would be better.

With your toddler you'd want to consider school catchment too and I'm not sure where that would be.

On the plus side it's well away from the Chester Road which is constant choking diesel fumes. Plus it's not Timperley or Sale so points for that too.

We're looking to move on from the B-Streets in the next 12 months or so (been putting it off as long as possible), but can find very few properties with a useful 3rd bedroom.

In the example above, it measures 2 x 2.5m... this is NOT a bedroom and would struggle to hold a decent sized bed, let alone wardrobe, drawers etc. In fact, head height aside, it is seriously only about twice as big as the storage space under my stairs.

  10. Does anyone know how he avoided building regs? Surely there are stages of the build which need to be signed off, so do building regs become void after 4 years, too? Or did he get the building regs department round and they never thought to check with the planning department? Very ballsy if he did!

Do you honestly think a man who has built his own house in a random field without Planning Permission is bothered about Building Control coming round to inspect he has used the correct thickness of insulation and the wiring adheres to Part P ?

  11. Grew up in Sale (firstly Sale Moor, then moving to the Wardle Road area near the Little B pub when I was 11). Parents still around there now so I know it well. In general, Sale is a good area, but the definition of "Sale" is so wide, it is hard to be specific - it extends right from areas around The Avenue, touching the race course estate, through to edge of Ashton on Mersey, Sale Moor border is hard to define, and Wythenshawe / Brooklands Road. Just within these few descriptions, I have gone from £1M+ properties, through to council bedsit land... I suggest narrowing your search down and re-posting... 80-90% of where I have described is fairly reasonable though, although on a Friday / Saturday night all bets are off, and you / your property has a VERY small chance of finding trouble. My parents went through a spate of having their car side mirror kicked off by drunks (this is on a desirable road - house probably costs upwards of £380k) - they always park it up the drive now

  12. 2016 is going to be the referendum year in Scotland although i think there will be 2 options now. If they get the oil. which they should their tax receipts will match their expenditure i was reading.

What will this mean for HPC in England i wonder?

No chance Wales will be going anywhere unless we get rid off them.

So what happens to the Labour party, seeing as half their numbers in Westminster are jocks?

  13. Those two oxygen thieves have been all over the media today... the wife was blaming their financial advisor earlier !! Apparently he took their payslips, binned them, then pimped them some Liar Loans on the higher income...

...she quickly glossed over the fact they must have had the opportunity to read / sign a contract along the way.

Husband says he gets a swirling feeling of doom in his stomach due to the debt... probably just the 6 Fray Bentos pies he has for lunch though

  14. Surely this is a good thing for HPC, Instead of the house sitting there for £100k and not selling they can now drop the price to £90k, sell and toddle off hand in hand into the sunset with their £10k Debt, meanwhile the new buyer has paid £90k and lowered the price of all similar properties in the area......no?

Exactly, this isn't really "help", it is encouraging downward movement in the market. As these characters are almost certainly to buy a smaller, cheaper property, the debt pro rata against the property is actually WORSE for them - and with the market only due to drop further, they could have to use this "help" several times, before they find themselves in a shared student bedsit in Middlesborough with £190k of old mortgage debt, wondering if that joyously cheery headline in the Daily Mail on 15/12/11 was just a dream.
