  1. Phillip Green is the worst retailer in the world.

    He's a good BSer.

Our local BHS is horrid - tatty, full of over priced crap clothes.

That's what the public want though! Wife dragged me to a local upmarket garden centre at the weekend and several thing stunned me:

Car park was packed - looked like Alton Towers on a bank holiday.

Even though it was Saturday, it was mostly full of retired folk using the overpriced canteen (£12 for a lasagne). Old dear sat opposite me was flashing her support stockings a la Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct - nearly choked on my locally sourced Cottage Pie. Most of them seemed to know the waiting staff so it was hardly a rare treat for them...

On the shop floor, those looking to buy were generally in their 50's & 60's with the odd family thrown in (us). I suspect it was the types who aren't particularly savvy on the internet, and fall for the "Was £2000, Now £600" sale cards.

I also suspect I could find almost every item they sold on the web for at least 20% less - plastic planters for £90 anyone?

Tills were busy and people were spending. There are still plenty of mugs with money out there...

  2. Just posted this on the NW forum:

Classic episode of Location Location on Ch4 right now.

Couple being "helped" by Phil (whilst sat in Hale Bar & Grill) who is channelling all his negotiation powers to secure a £395k property in Timperley at the ASKING PRICE!!

He had a very concerned look on his face as he rang the EA and put this ludicrous, almost embarrassing, proposal across.

5 minutes later the suspense was palpable as the EA rang back with the much awaited news... Phil looked tense. The couple looked scared.

But no-one need worry, the asking price was ACCEPTED!

Phil looked on smugly as the couple punched the air with delight. He then suggested they buy "something a little stronger" to celebrate.

  4. Just listening to BBC Radio 2 news covering the story as read by Alan Dedicoat (voice of the National Lottery).

He has the same cheery lilt in his voice when announcing the HPI as he does when he says "Early indications show there are 3 winning tickets this week, each winning a total of £X million pounds".

When he followed this with news that house prices were falling in Ireland, he used the slightly sombre and poignant tone he uses for "Early indications show there are no UK jackpot winners this week"

  5. Guardian

Leeds building society has launched a mortgage with a "zero" interest rate for the first six months.

The deal, thought to be the first of its kind in the UK, would cut a borrower's monthly payments by hundreds of pounds during the first few months, freeing up cash for home improvements, furniture or other spending, the lender said.

The deal is available on a three- or five-year fix and gives customers the option of paying no interest for the first three or six months.

The interest rate paid after that will depend on the chosen interest-free period and how long the borrower chooses to fix. The three-year fix starts at 3.79%, with three months at 0%, and the five-year fix at 4.23%

During these months the customer will still have to pay off the capital, and the interest they do not pay at the beginning will be added into the later payments. But the initial payments will be considerably lower than if they had opted for a standard deal.

More fishes caught in the net. Anyone thinking rates are rising any time soon are kidding themselves - this game is rumbling on for years.

  6. What things would you be honestly be prepared to pay more (potentially considerably more) for just to be able to grab them in Alty? As I say, I can't think of anything.

Good question, and anyone who knows the answer could be a rich man.

I do think there is a market for good quality, locally produced and specialist food shops, as this is one area where the supermarkets fail miserably. I can't say with any certainty their business is thriving, but the little deli on the corner of Hawthorn Rd and Stamford Park Rd always seems to be pulling a crowd whenever I walk past, and it's certainly not cheap.

Knowledgeable staff in well stocked DIY shops can also buck the trend, as B&Q take the p!55 on nearly everything. Always a queue in Atlantic Timber, although granted, this is hardly the town centre.

  7. Amazes me how many failed businesses put all the blame at the landlords / parking situation door. (I believe the main car park is 10p for an hour, 30p for 2 hours BTW, hardly breaking the bank for the average motorist)

Up and down that High St, nearly every third unit has been occupied by a pointless, copycat, "get rich quick" shyster. From the poorly researched and executed restaurants that change hands every 6 months on Oxford / Ashley Rd junction, through to the scally DJ bars, Willie Wonka's chocolate emporium near the market... THEY are just as much to blame as the landlords for devaluing Altrincham and dragging it into the gutter over the last few years.

Then there were the businesses that just failed to keep up with modern tastes and the arrival internet shopping - Jaeger, that weird "antique" shop, even Blockbuster came a cropper (not recognising that Lovefilm with no late penalties was clearly a more favourable choice).

  8. Errrrrrrrr - having lost my income because of rent/rates/parking issues (never mind the net) I can assure you that most current shopkeepers would agree with my views...........

I cannot see how I accused you of trolling in any way shape or form.

Altrincham however deserves all the stick it gets.

Lets be quite clear here, I started commenting on "houses" not shops but if you insist we can carry on with shops.

Greed finished the shops in Altrincham. In my opinion it will be lucky not to end up like Whalley Range (which was "the" most desirable part of Greater Manchester in its day)

That is unless Landlords get real, rates are seriously lowered and all the parking restrictions are torn up. I have lived in/near Altrincham all my life. It used to be the only place I shopped now it is my last resort. I certainly would not dream of going out into Altrincham for a night out (not without a bodyguard anyhow)

Maybe we could carry this on in 10 years time (I believe that was your prediction) B)

I'm not sure if this is a windup

  9. I thought this site was all about the un-sustainability of property prices...........

some of these arguments appear to applaud it

I for one would never invest in Altrincham High street unless I was called Mr Tesco - a lot of my business colleagues concur

Who praised unsustainable property prices? Certainly not me.

Many on this site are perpetual pessimists - I have given several examples of positive investment in the local area, but I suspect you would rather see the High St finally turned into a post-apocalyptic waste land. Perversely celebrating when Dilli closes its doors, shouting "I told you so" when Marks and Spencer decants, dancing a jig as Y McGregor pulls down the shutters for the last time.

Personally, I am quite excited about the future for Altrincham, so please don't try to garner support for your argument by cheaply accusing me of trolling.

  10. Really??????????

As an ex - retailer Altrincham is dead. Rents are ridiculous as are rates. Parking is an expensive lottery. Landlords, parking gestapo and council have finished it (recovery within 10 years is very optimistic)

But we were talking about Hale (and Wilmslow)

Well, whoever is investing all their money in Altair doesn't agree with that view. Neither does the developer of Stamford House.

I'm also certain restaurants, shops and service outlets will benefit from patient and staffing at the hospital.

Yes, Alty has gone through an appallingly bad patch, but a lot of the failed businesses destroyed each other. Many factors point to the cycle turning the other way now.

  11. Trouble is when and if these areas do crash, they will no longer be a desirable place to live in

Whereas more "sensible" areas - Cheadle Hulme Poynton Bramhall will continue to plod along quite happily (and much cheaper too)

Garbage. These areas have never had the kudos of Hale - on top, there is huge investment coming in Alty / Hale Barns that will transform the commercial / leisure sectors and generate new business as a result. Once "The Square" at Hale Barns is complete, other (historically, rather bland) businesses on that parade will flourish. Equally, Altair, the new hospital, tram / bus station, Stamford House developments will see a new lease of life come to Altrincham.

Within the next 10 years, Altrincham / Hale will further extend their desirability over other "similar" Cheshire towns.

  12. So, the press thinks rates are to rise...surely the purveyors of money, the banks, will already know and be raising rates and criteria LONG before it gets to be released to the public.

There have been multiple similar warnings over the last few years, only to be followed by a REDUCTION in rates - thus capturing any existing sensible borrowers who heeded the advice.

The introduction of the new low rate is used to tempt NEW borrowers into the game, not necessarily help existing ones.

  13. So - any of you with building experience - how much would the cost range be to repoint external brickwork on a 1 storey (i.e. ground +1 flight) house that was a rectangle 20m on one side and 7 meters the short side?

I've got a mate that's been quoted 5,000 GBP and that seems steep....

I was searching for similar data recently, but sorry to say it's not as simple as that... where is the house, what mortar mix is required, what is the access like, how bad is the extg pointing (or how difficult to rake out). If you search online, a figure of £25m2 seems to pop up on average. (in which case £5000 seems like a good price)

  14. Yara has a fantastic reputation.

After going twice, I wasn't sure why. Maybe the food gets better latter on.

Know what you mean, but it's just so different from the usual Indian / Chinese identikit menus - goes down well with the rich Jewish contingent.

The cars parked on Oxford Road late in the evening (esp in summer months) are something to behold. I have seen several million pounds worth of motors in barely a 100m stretch some nights.

As ever, someone has got wind of their success and tried to emulate it in the centre of Hale (Sahara?). Never very busy when I've been in.

  15. Their website http://www.sabordobrasil-altrincham.co.uk/

Reads like they're looking for new premises. I've never understood the leisure and hospitality sector; so much stress and so many pitfalls.

Good luck to them - just hope they find somewhere with a little more ambience. Can't see how they were generating enough turnover to survive before though. Used to pass in the week and they were often lucky to have 2 customers (Yara on Oxford Rd in contrast was always full)

  16. I noticed last night that the Sabor Do Brasil (sp?) restraunt has gone under with a notice pinned to the window on behalf of the LL claiming reposession for unpaid rent or somesuch.

Shame about Sabor, but can't say I am surprised. They took over a unit where a tried, tested & successful restaurant chain (at least in Liverpool, anyway) had already failed. That stretch of retail / restaurant units will NEVER work in Altrincham. The positioning of the units in relation to the junctions and main roads, means that you feel very uncomfortable sitting anywhere near the window (people in traffic staring into the resturant whilst you eat).

I was surprised when the Mexican (Tavern) failed, and now I know that no-one will ever make a success of that unit. Having said that, it was a lazy business model from Sabor, as they were just trying to cash in on Bem Brazils popularity in town.

  17. The Nu Labour lot started it and I used to play Bull Sh!t bingo whenever one of them was interviewed... even more irritating from them as most of their supporters are anything but.

The ConDem lot have just started using it in the last few weeks - Grant Schnapps was the last one I heard on Daybreak - makes my skin crawl when I hear it

  18. Property Bee reporting that the Paul Young house - Wiki quote

(On 15 July, 2000, Young had been complaining of chest pains after returning from a shopping trip. He died of a heart attack at around 6.30pm at his home on Hale Road, Hale, Altrincham, before the ambulance arrived)
bit weird knowing the exact anniversary / time someone died in your home - went up from £525k to £529k within the first week.
