Moving To Stowmarket - Good Idea?

A question for the regional forums.

Am looking at a job change and relocation, with the possible option of basing ourselves in Stowmarket. Provisionally property prices look 20% cheaper than where I currently am and with a potential 20% pay rise, this could be a win-win situation.

However, I know next to nothing about the area. Would appreciate any feedback from any posters who know the area. Given that many UK towns have their fair share of chavs and are overrun by our friends from East Europe, have high streets with only charity shops and estate agents etc, I'd really appreciate some balanced views about the town.

Cheers.

If you are looking for a hub of excitement and culture, it probably isn't the town for you. Not aware of any problems, it is just a little rural small market town.

OK - thanks. That actually appeals a lot. We used to live in a rural market town on the other side of the country but had to leave for higher paid work elsewhere when the nipper came along.

I have known Stowmarket for many years (33) and in feb 2015 I moved to Onehouse, about 2 miles from the centre.

In my opinion the town is on an upward curve.

Years ago we used to joke about Stowmarket as being somewhere inhabited by people challenged by the prospect of finding the rail station to leave.

Today, its still a quiet place with not a lot to do for the under 25's. On the plus side it has a cinema (about to be uprated and updated) a direct connection to London Liverpool St (100mins, soon to be less apparently!), numerous good places to eat and drink in town and the surrounding villages. Crime is very low , especially property crime. People are friendly and Suffolk in general is a civilised and relaxing place to live. Not good if you are into big city living, but I for one am very happy about moving here. Its good value for property too. I swapped a 2 bedroom flat in Hove for a 3 bed detached house with an acre of south facing garden and pocketed £60K to boot!
