  1. Perhaps the govt should add a education tax to Uni fees etc... Make people borrow money to pay tax?

I think this could be a revenue winner.

We're already paying for it through inflation. Never had any debt other than a student loan and I borrowed that very reluctantly...but with that unemployment rate what chance do I have of getting back into work with just my existing credentials?

  2. The parasites are making what they can from the existing system and are reluctant to invest for tomorrow...our overcrowded second rate, high priced service is not something to be proud of.........people drive simply because they have on other choice, the way things are going soon there will be no choices. ;)

When the anti-car measures overwhelm them, or the economy collapses? What would be the use of an extended rail network then? We don't transport freight that way, or coal for power stations any more...

  3. Money doesn't have to be wasted if the right people are put in charge of the job.....a healthy economy is heavily reliant on an affordable reliable transport system...an investment for all our futures. ;)

The private sector doesn't want to invest in it, and will probably piggyback on the project, as I don't trust this government to keep it in-house. Unless you think National Rail can raise the money through other means?

  4. I've just been looking at some IT jobs in the NHS. From July 2010, it becomes an offence in law not to do CRB checks in a range of industries' employees, even if they have no actual contact with vulnerable people.

The CRB's already marginalise people with petty offences recorded against them, also cautions count as convictions and police suspicion is also valid in this brave new world.

So, with NuLab and previously the Tories putting our younger generation through pretend degrees, is this the new future of ensuring that there will be adequate supply of low-end workers by creating an underclass of "felons" who get barred from decent jobs and have to empty bins for a living?

More government meddling. They just don't know when to **** off.

  5. From my observations there is definitely less traffic on the roads, (still the same amount of roadworks and cones) a journey that usually takes two and a half hours can now be done in two, same car, same time, same distance, twice the price. ;)

We need to start relaying the train tracks we foolishly pulled up in the past...let the train take the strain, given the chance it will be the transport of choice for the future...there is a huge demand but lack of affordable supply.

Problem is we collectively rendered most of the old network useless by building over it. I also don't fancy having billions of public funds spunked on half-arsed rail projects like with Crossrail...

  6. World's top firms cause $2.2tn of environmental damage

Yes we know they pollute, and all those with stocks and shares, or who pay taxes are in the liability loop. We lucky few in the western geopolitical sphere are all complicit as it can be argued we have all enjoyed the benefits of modern society.

Unfortunately though, it will be those least able to pay the clean-up bill who are given the lions share.

    Nothing much has changed.

Except over half of that figure is "greenhouse gases". But what else can be expected from the UN...

  7. You don't get WTC until you're 25, and the LHA stuff falls down if your landlord finds out (I have yet to be able to find a landlord that played by the rules *and* rented to people eligible for LHA).

So if you've not got the bank of Mum and Dad (or equivalent), you're stuffed.

  8. Savers have been heavily punished throughout this debacle. Getting into debt gets you a free ride (government paying mortgages, easy bankruptcy etc), saving results in your spending power being eroded for benefit of the feckless... I'm not sure how this helps sell government bonds either.

  9. ???? You in IT obviously HPC001 - I take it you are not working, can't find work but find yourself in the position of no work so no income but unable to get dole?

I'm ineligible because I took a student loan to do a vocational degree that bundles in some of the IT certifications I was discussing earlier. The stupid thing is I'd be better off (in the short term) by claiming dole, because of the seperate housing benefit calculation..

  10. Forget about VOIP. For VOIP you need minimum Cisco CCNP (6 exams) + CCVP (5 exams), Microsoft MCSE + Exchange (7 exams) most also need Avaya experience. And for that you will be lucky to work 100 miles from home and get £200 paid per day into your Ltd.

Already getting some of those paid for, may as well go on to CCVP since I'm wanting to do the others anyway. Edit: by the way CCNP is 4 exams now, Cisco revised the structure.

I gave up with IPT after finding out that my wifes' nephew was raking in £3k a month in tax credits working as a Kays courier while I was having to pay b&b in West London to earn a princely 2k a month take home.

Surely that would entail having eligible children?

Since I gave up that malarky I can now ENJOY reading again!

I don't get paid for sitting on my ****, I'm not eligible for the dole either.

  11. But you cannot keep on the qualifications band-wagon in IT - can you? It is never-ending, constant re-learning and no one can keep that up indefinitely surely?

The internet isn't disappearing any time soon. Then we have emerging technologies like VOIP, an increasing number of people working from home (requiring secure access to company networks). I suspect getting Deustche Bank's EMEA servers upgraded from MS Windows 2000 to 2003 or 2008 will be a big project in itself - in fact they're outsourcing a lot of roles now, see: http://www.computing.co.uk/computing/news/2256860/deutsche-bank-replace-core and http://www.computing.co.uk/computing/news/2251283/outsourcing-gives-staff-world-4857637 . Then there are the non-technical skills, like presenting information. I could go on but you get the gist.

This is exactly what DH is doing and he just got his pay raise and bonuses, working for a technology company.

Well, they obviously appreciate good coders. I just about have a grasp of Java since I spent most of my time on the support side of the business.

  12. This is an interesting thread as I was just about to post a thread asking all the IT workers on here how they are finding the current IT market, what the salaries are like and whether most are deciding to re-train in something else (as seems to be common on here?)?

Generally you're required to have a much broader skillset to stay in work, never mind get good pay (somewhat better situation if you have software development skills). As for retraining, I'm looking for any kind of work while expanding my knowledge and qualifications.
