Right To Buy today is Right To Taxpayer Subsidised Rents tomorrow

'Right to buy' to be scrapped in Scotland

After seeing how Right To Buy turned into Right To Sell (first resale of a council house for more than £1m last year) or Right To mop up Housing benefit (1/3 of Right To Buys are now rented back to the taxpayer at 3 times the price) the Scots have done the right thing and scrapped this.

  • How is it that a council tenant can have a right to buy but a private tenant cant?

If a council tennant has been drawing HB for his rent then he gets a discount to buy after a number of years I cant think how this benefits society. At the very least he should het his prior HB offset against the discount,,,shouldnt he?

  • “They were apprehensive about disclosing their address because they felt it would negate their chance of getting a job or even being accepted for an interview”
I have never seen a CV with an address on it, this is a blatant, snobby lie. I’ve never asked anyone their address in an interview, and only know the rough location of where a few of my co-workers live

  • A lot of people in those right to buy houses have been repossessed since all those equity releases on their 60% discounted homes. Now the council have to rehouse them, and the bottom feeders are buying up the repos up for private rent.

Credit limited – that’s just the way the market works. Extending credit is essentially a risk management operation like insurance, you proce your product based on risk
Dating limited – it is a private matter what people’s criteria for finding a date
Jobs – this is very much a matter to prevent discrimination. Which doesn’t happen because people don’t put their addresses on their CVs.
For the top two, Right To Buy is an ineffective and costly solution
