Assuming you believe the figures, that is…

Inflation sticks at 2.7 percent for 3rd month in December

"The Office for National Statistics said utility prices rose 3.9 percent on the year while fuel costs fell by 0.2 percent. It said the biggest downward pressure on the index came from a fall in transport costs as airlines cut fares". (Ooooh, transport costs DOWN? How about those rail fares?)

Alan, the rail fare hikes were pretty savage, more than 5%, but that was only once a year, further, most people don’t take the train, it’s mainly commuters who work in London (which makes up half of all rail travel or some such surprising statistic). Most people go to work by car or bus.

  • Lies, Damned Lies and Statistics or the ONS is living in a parallel universe.

    Perhaps both.

  • RPI up 3.1% (not mentioned in the article). Rail hikes will show up in the January figures.

I did a rough calculation for the last 20 years or so and on two different measures (houses and petrol) inflation has averaged 7% pa. Sounds closer to the mark than 2.7%.
