MP’s 2nd homes ~ sleight of hand

How MPs avoided expenses payback

"In 2010, MPs were told that at the end of two years they would no longer be allowed to claim mortgage interest on expenses. Dozens who continued to claim during this period were told that if the value of the second home increased, they must hand over the “capital gain” to parliamentary authorities. But The Sunday Telegraph (ST) has found that a number of the MPs told parliamentary authorities that the value of their second home had fallen in the two-year period — meaning they did not have to pay back a penny. ST's investigation found that in some cases the MPs’ house prices had fallen despite increases of as much as 12.65 per cent in average values in their neighbourhoods in the same period!"

  • Parliament must consider why the turn out at the recent by-elections and police commissioner elections was so low.

The electorate doesn’t have apathy, it has utter disdain for Government. I will continue to abstain from the any future elections.

    Heheh, good spot.

As somebody else said recently, if you are sitting on a jury, they expect really high standards – no contact with defendant, no vested interest, swear on Holy Bibble you tell the truth, not allow personal prejudices to sway you, no leaking juicy insider gossip to friends and family, certainly no acting thereon to your own advantage etc, and you are in big sh1t if they catch you lying or breaking the rules, they will lock you up.

It’s a pity we don’t apply the same strict rules to MPs.
