  • Yawn.

“Ultra-low interest rates are to blame for this market distortion, he says. So the killer question is this: how long will today’s low rates last? The Bank of England – and the politicians – will try to keep interest rates down for as long as possible to buy time for the banks and the economy to recover.”

Indeed. Short of interest rate hikes, which don’t appear to be on the agenda (we’ve just had even more QE!), house prices aren’t going down.

  • Bear Necessities says:

I thought it was the Guardian that didn’t bother with proof readers.

“As he says, look at the facts: from 2001 to 20011”

    That’s a hell of a time period

  • My view – until houses fall in London, the pwoperdee dweam lives on.

The slow downward dribble of house prices at the moment is not enough – it will take years for things to get to a sensible level and of course the (by then Labour) gov’t will do anything to turn it around and say it never happened. And all the while the sheeple will cling on to their “aspirationally-priced” houses because they believe their town can “do a London” and reverse their fortunes. If that happens we’ll all be too old or dead to care when houses nationwide finally get down to a sensible multiple of average income.

We need a precipitous collapse in the capital, otherwise it will just squat there like Cthulu, emanating bad money, false promises, and dire property TV shows. Kill the beast, I say!
