Waiting for a helping hand
Generation rent hopes for an inheritance to get on the housing ladder
Generation rent’s despair at ever getting on the housing ladder is taking a morbid turn with 42pc of tenants claiming their best hope of raising a deposit and becoming a homeowner is an inheritance. YouGov questioned more than 2,000 adults in rented accommodation and found that half reckon house prices are so high and mortgages so scarce that they will never be able to buy. Older tenants are most likely to hope inheritance will lift them into home ownership. Those aged 55 and over and those aged 35 to 44 who currently aspire to own a home are most reliant on being left something by family or friends to get on the property ladder, according to 57pc and 55pc of respondents respectively.
