Media eventually picks up on the fact that London is empty

London retailers bemoan loss of trade as shoppers stay away

Retail business owners, market traders and restaurants in central London are feeling the Olympic pinch and say their livelihoods are at risk as tourists and locals continue to stay away for the Olympics. With trade 10-12% down many are barely covering their daily operating costs with tourist attractions fairing even worse with trade down up to 35% on this time last year.

Saw this on the news tonight, apparently some businesses are down 60% compared to usual trade. You’ve been sold a pup, I’m guessing the only Olympic legacy will be a few trough snufflers did well from the contracts awarded. The so-called jobs for local people will have benefitted Poland & Lithuania

  • Two weeks’ diminished trading is bad news for the businesses involved, but it’s about time London got a taste of what the rest of the country has been suffering these past few years.

I was a bit worried about travel chaos, but actually it’s been fine so far, Tube a bit emptier than normal, I’d say (and my commute goes through Stratford).

I don’t think the lack of shoppers can be blamed only on Olympics. Rather to the fact that less and less people have any spare cash nowadays.
