Moody's poised to downgrade UK banks

"It is thought that British banks including Barclays, HSBC and Royal Bank of Scotland are facing a cut in their ratings by as much as two notches, reflecting the continued impact of the eurozone crisis on the global banking system". (see also Reuters & financial blogs).

  • it makes no sense to downgrade them, but then if everything in the world is downgraded then what they are all at the same level effectively
    much in the same way as house prices go up you are no better off as all houses in the street go up by same amount

  • Mark, could it be argued you’re suggesting that if no students get above 60% then 60% should become the new 100%?
    ie, is the rating a case of relative rankings or absolute risk? Or, if all banks are utterly dodgy then utterly dodgy becomes the new AAA? And what becomes the new D?
