As banks tighten up on their lending, mortgages are getting more expensive and harder to come by. That's bad news for the housing market. John Stepek explains what's going on, and what it means for house prices.

  • nipped into morrisons last night, people were pushing and shoving each other to get to the end of day discounted out of date food, I am beginning to think a lot more people are on the breadline than papers believe or want to report – the cliff edge is very near and it wont take much to push the houses over much like Jezzas homemade camper van on top gear crashing into the rocks after sliding off the cliff edge

    The trains into London from Essex were almost empty last Saturday- very unusual. I understand the weather could have had something to do with it but I get the impression many families are on financial lock down.
