Follow live coverage of today's announcement of reforms to the planning system under a new National Planning Policy Framework.   • The biggest issue here is the move to a national framework. But the UK is a tapestry of conflicting needs. In a world of top heavy corporations and governments, this a further step in the wrong direction.

    Actually, the old local plan system worked quite well. Yes, it was inflexible, but all they had to do was change the law to allow local planning offices the power to amend one policy or one chapter at a time.
