What’s sauce for the goose

Let's bring in a bedroom tax on everybody

Man talks sense. The lefties want "bedroom tax" on owner-occupiers, the right wingers want "bedroom tax" on council tenants. Why not be consistent and have it on everybody? Sorted.

  • One of the few articles about property that is actually balanced. The Evening Standard is basically the Daily Mail in a sharp suit.

  • How about, Marx, that we be consistent on everybody. Stop funding the IMF, save a few tends of billions, and don’t tax any bloody bedrooms. You really do believe in social engineering, I bet you want to discourage people from having babies to reduce the population. Do I hear the word eugenics?

  • Yes, you have mastered the Hegelian dialectic of problem, reaction, solution. The left and right battle it out in a smoky room and come up with a solution that gives them the maximum money, tax the hell out of everyone.

  • If it encourages builders to create houses with better sized rooms, rather than passing off a cupboard as a bedroom, I am all for it!

Cracking article BTW, in the absence of any meaningful housing construction, the fairer allocation of existing stock is the next best thing. Strange to see such heresy in the Evening Substandard.

  • “problem, reaction, solution” – yep a line trotted out almost religously from either Malct, planning4acrash or freemanphil before being banned from this site a few years ago – there is a distinct pattern forming for those who can be bothered to cast their memories back a few years.

  • Ok, so I have an (imaginary) 5 bedroom house. I phone my local builder up and ask him to make it into a luxury 2 bedroom house.

Any one see the problem? If you are going to tax dwellings then FFS tax the overall floor area not the number of rooms the floor area has been divided into.

    DUH!

  • Yeah this is a great idea as socialism has worked out so great throughout history.

So this article basic point is, both privately owned householders and socially supported households both have bathrooms in their houses, so we should treat them the same. Or put in more clearer terms, forget private ownership, we will socialise all housing and then central allocate as deemed appropriate by the powers that be. I believe strongly in the rights of private ownership, we have massive deficits due to an overbearing social benefits entitlements and socialism of a corrupt banking system loses. More socialism is not the answer.

p4c and freemanphil were one and the same I believe, and I said the other day that I think libertas is a new incarnation – like Dr Who, there has been the occasional regeneration around here. But I don’t recall p4c being as rabidly right wing, so perhaps it is actually malct, or heaven help us, someone completetrly new. An interesting exercise in internet social analysis.

Misused word of the day/year/century – socialism. Pass me a tabloid somebody.

  • If we’re going all equal rights on taxation can we do the same with right to buy? Force landlords to sell properties to tenants for a massive discount based on time renting. Hurrah for the level playing field.

  • Admittedly maybe i went a little ott with the socialism team, but:

socialism – a theory or system of social organization that advocates the vesting of the ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, of capital, land, etc., in the community as a whole.

So if you are dictating who should live where it’s a socialist policy. It doesn’t matter you are doing in directly or through the tax system. If people have bought a house and want to live there let them be. This constant desire to medal in other poeple lives and tell them what to do isn’t good.
