I would happily take up this scheme, I think it is a brilliant idea. One thing though – will Housing Benefit and Income Support disregard money people have saved for a deposit? Even working people can need some help with their rent, if the house price is £100k, the deposit would be £5000, which is £2000 above the savings threshold for benefits, so people who try to save end up losing benefits, thus they will have to reduce how much they save. Could we have ring-fenced home deposit accounts (which could help with cashflow) where if people pay in, it will not be assessed as personal savings – but it can only be used as a home deposit. If it is withdrawn for any other purpose then, of course, benefits would have to be capped.
Just a thought. people who want to buy are trapped by the savings rule, this could be a way around it.
