Council House Tenants Face Sublet Crackdown

"Council house tenants who sublet their homes could face jail under a crackdown on social housing abuse. New government proposals could also see wealthy tenants forced to pay the market rate for continuing to live in their council homes. It is not an offence to sublet a council house - a loophole that allows an estimated 160,000 tenants to move out and take rent from someone else". "That's why in addition to a national crackdown, which has been backed with £19m government cash, we will shortly publish proposals for consultation to criminalise tenancy fraud."

Cannot believe that it isn’t already illegal – and that people on high incomes are allowed to live in council housing – think the income limit should be much less than £100k…

  • With one hand we’ll crack down on people who sublet their council homes. But with the other hand we’ll encourage them to buy their council house outright, with a whopping discount; and then they can continue to let it out.

I’m guessing that many of those 160,000 tenants are in London, since that’s where the greatest profits would be – you’d never get £1,000 a week for a council property outside London. Unless councils are so stupid as to pay housing benefit to people subletting their own council flats, then we can assume that 100% of subletters are employed.

How many of the 1.8m families currently on council housing waiting lists are employed? I don’t know, but it’s certainly less than 100%. So in some of the roughest council estates in London, we’re replacing employed residents with unemployed residents. Same goes for the moves to kick out people on high incomes – though presumably they’re not living on rough estates. In short, the sink estates are sunk.

    That was my first thought.

  • This is mind-bending conservative thinking in action again. Who created the crisis? The Conservatives. With the biggest political bribe in history. Who poured fuel on the fire instead of extinguishing it? New Labour. Now the coalition are doing exactly the wrong thing and claiming yet another victory over the feckless. To laud the Tories over Labour or Labour over the Coalition or the Lib Dems over anything requires lobotomised thinking.

    More hysterical a-historical hyperbole.
