Good news for slumlords

Cuts fail to halt £2bn rise in housing benefit costs

Housing benefit costs will rise by nearly £2 billion by 2016 despite government efforts to cut the bill, said the Office for Budget Responsibility yesterday. The OBR’s economic and fiscal outlook said: "This is mainly due to changes in the population eligible for housing benefit. Recent survey information suggests that the proportion of people likely to be eligible for housing benefit continues to grow and we have reflected this in our assumptions about caseload growth."

Presumably, the govt’s on a losing battle unless they can arrest the steady rise in unemployment (ergo more people eligible for HB support).

  • I have been thinking that with the reduced number of students going to uni that they can place all of the housing benefit claimants together in halls of residence and easily cut the housing benefits bill.
The beauty of this idea is the claimants will hate it that much that they will stop breeding like rabbits and work themselves out of the shithole that they have to live in. If they don’t that’s fine because it will be cheaper than keeping them in private rentals. Another benefit of this scheme it is will reduce competition for private rental thus giving people more disposable income and help the economy.

    What’s not to like?

  • khards,
Put families in studio flats rather than larger flats. The presence of a baby or child sleeping in the same room would surely be enough to put off most romantic endeavours.

I suspect you might prefer the old-fashioned way of dealing with single mothers: Wikipedia: Magdalene asylum.

@3 – That would be awful for them. Instead I vote we keep giving the feckless and stupid free homes, while the educated work their whole fertile lives to pay off student debt and live in cramped rental accommodation while trying in vain to save a deposit for somewhere big enough to breed.

Another couple of generations and socialism will have completely bred this Isle into being nothing but a cesspool of foul-mouthed, knuckle dragging, imbeciles.
