Why are the welsh so aggressive against housing?

AN £8m plan to demolish the site of Britain’s biggest cannabis factory and turn it into student flats has been described as “campus Colditz”. Hughes Bros Llangefni, have put in a proposal to demolish the former Jewsons site in Hirael, Bangor – and build 162 flats.

There are no images of plans nor photos of the local area in the article so it’s difficult to comment.

PS Pathetic attempt to stereotype a nation.

  • The article was about 1 bed student flats, not houses, then you made a sweeping generalisation; calm down!

  • I overhead a conversation in our canteen yesterday, one of the guys is a councillor and ex-plannig officer!!!!

He was chatting to this other guy (Both late 40’s) about what is happening in the area. I overheard “Well we don’t want any more houses in the area”, they both chuckled.
I turned around at which they both looked at me in shock, I gave them a long hard stare. I didn’t say anything because one of them is a director.

It is amazing when you actually meet some NIMBYS up close like that, quite shocking.

  • Here’s a link to the planning application on Gwynedd Council’s website: Application details (C10A/0614/11/LL)

Click on the link to drawing #2 (PDF). The buildings look perfectly reasonable to me, and Bangor isn’t exactly a world heritage city. Looking on Google Street View, there are already several hideous three-storey buildings close to that site. The only people making a fuss are surely residents of the few houses on the hill behind the site who stand to lose their nice view. I really don’t understand how they got 500 signatures against it.

I agree with the locals 100% on the parking issue though. Students and their guests will bring cars, so make space for them. If you don’t make space they’ll bring cars anyway and annoy everyone in so doing.

  • The very same Mark. Old Jewson’s Builders Merchant site being used as a cannabis factory… with the help of a local mortgage broker.

Re the Welsh: Personally I think all English immigrants should be made to sit a culture knowledge test – and also learn to speak the Welsh language before being allowed into God’s country 🙂
