Marek Puts Historic Brewery Chimney On eBay

Fancy owning a genuine piece of Wrexham history? Well, this week former Wrexham AM and MP Dr John Marek has put the iconic Victorian brewery chimney based on Tuttle Street up for sale on eBay. Dr Marek bought the grade II-listed landmark 20 years ago to prevent it from being demolished but recently decided to pass it on. Having failed to find someone to give the 120ft chimney to locally Dr Marek has now decided to put it up for sale on eBay with a modest starting price of 99p.

  • The structure is a huge liability – it is completely function-less, and has not the slightest potential for earning revenue, yet the owner will be responsible for maintenance, and insuring themselves against the possibility of the odd brick coming loose from the flared summit.

Realistically, it’s probably going to cost the owner £1k+ p.a. to maintain..

  • Wrexham’s just up the road – I was shocked to learn that there are landmarks there in need of preserving

  • Why the ‘eck is it a Grade II listed landmark? It’s just a chimney!

Reckon it’s a steal at £1420. Fully functional apparently, so will be good to go when the system collapses by 2016, the currency implodes (making us really competitive in low tech industries once more), the benefits stop and the plebs are queuing up to work in diabolical conditions. The owner will have to find far less capital to build the rest of his cheap ceramics firing factory onto the side than if he had to build the entire thing from scratch.

  • Well I still wouldn’t bet on it. However at PaddyPower.com, you can bet on it.

    PaddyPower.com: Eurozone to break up?

    Rules of the bet:
Applies to any Eurozone country completely abandoning the Euro currency. Must be officially implemented by stated date, ie. country must no longer have Euro, or derivative or tier of Euro, as their official national currency.

    Current (decimal) odds are:
    – Eurozone break-up by year 2015: 2.20
    – Eurozone break-up by year 2020: 1.57

For those of you unfamiliar with gambling terminology, the first one means if you bet £1 then you get £2.20 back (£1.20 winnings + £1 original stake returned). In banking terminology, that’s like a savings account giving 120% interest (but with the risk of 100% loss).

The problem with placing a long-term bet, such as the 2020 one, is that the potential 57% gain could be wiped out by inflation. It would only take 6% a year over 8 years to compound to more than 57%. Also you can’t access the money until the event takes place. On the positive side, any winnings are free of capital gains tax.
