Green Shoots Of Sanity Returning
Social housing spare rooms a luxury - welfare minister
Spare bedrooms for people in social housing are a luxury the country can no longer afford, a minister has said. Tenants with spare rooms will lose £11 a week in housing benefit under changes going through Parliament. Welfare Reform Minister Lord Freud told BBC Radio 4's You and Yours the cuts were needed as the housing benefit bill was "out of control".

Makes an interesting contrast to the previous article..!
Spare rooms in owner-occupied housing = A Very Good Thinf Indeed and to be warmly encouraged via the whole tax-economic-subsidy system
Spare rooms in social housing = A Very Bad Thing Indeed and to be punished as harshly as possible.

I think the people of this country as a whole would rather have more social housing built. In stead we get an accelerated right to buy, a possible closer of council housing lists and a kick in the teeth for benefit claiments, will this affect pensioners? The politicians should remind themselves that they are here to serve the majoritory opinion and not dictate to that majority their own preferences. Roll on the next ellection.

As the article says, tax payers shouldn’t be paying for claimants to live in luxury!
Obviously however, exemptions need to be made such as for disabled people, or for people who are on a list to downsize pending smaller accommodation becoming available.

Brilliant, a national spare room database! Next, legislation to make us all carry a plastic with us at all times. Titantic, deckchairs, etc.
