Basically, it is all going pear shaped

* Comment is free The notion of Britain as a property-owning democracy is in tatters

Homelessness up, housing benefit claimants up, home ownership declining. top income deciles get richer, while the lowest ones get more deprives. Bodes well for a HPC, but ... ugly.

  • Ugly is one word for it, nickb. I would call it sordid.

  • Comment taken from reader –

“That brief period between 1917 and 1979, when British wealth, trembling in fear of revolution, ceded some power, opportunity and money to the working classes is over. There is now no politics to express or admit the enormity of what has happened since the 1980s – how wealth and human respect drained from the bottom to enrich and glorify the top.”

No we didn’t. But it’s fascinating that three conscience pieces appear in both left and right wing rags within two days. Is there hope yet?

  • [email protected] …Hope? No, there isn’t! The fact that articles in similar vein appear in several newspapers in a few days of each other shows:
    1) the authors read and recycle and
    2) that the plutocrats are confident enough to leave the peasants to moan and chatter knowing they will do nothing at all, being totally incapable of organising any response.
Mick Rupert @ 3… are you too young to know what happened during Thatcher/Regan or just don’t understand how this all happened?

  • Many of the so called ‘home owners’ as they are called are in fact the ‘debt owners’ sucked in by the Tory inspired illusion of home ownership that took off in the early 80’s, and was continued under new-Labour. The fact is that many mortgage holders of bailed out banks are in fact now paying their mortgages to http://www.ukar.co.uk {100% owned by HM Treasury} …ie ‘the government’!.. erm, at bit like a council house with rent…except one day after you stagger on and keep a job you eventually own the property, but in the meantime you look after the up-keep, maintenance, etc….. Once it is yours – what then? Live ‘rent free’… but lack any liquid assets, or sell and down-size..if you can?
