John Heron speaking at the Comedy of mortgage lenders BTL conference

Paragon calls for government to support private rented sector

......."The private rented sector makes a great contribution to the UK economy – it facilitates labour mobility and flexibility, provides an income to thousands of small businesses, supports a number of associated industries, such as letting agents and maintenance companies, oils the wheels of the housing market and makes a great contribution to the public purse. “Buy-to-let has played a major role in this, providing the vital finance needed to fund the improvement in choice and standards. Buy-to-let is not just about a balance sheet – it has had a clear and tangible beneficial impact on the lives of millions of renters.”

Rather than spend money on the ‘housing market’ the, goverment needs to ‘oil the wheels’ of industry, or there will be no need for the housing, be it rented or owned.

Cripes, reading that article has really brought home just what unsung heroes these landlords are. Frankly I feel like I don’t credit mine with providing me with all this social mobility I have. God bless Section 21. Excuse me while I have a moment.

  • Sib’s – you should take your Landlord out for a curry and a pint tonight as a gesture of appreciation – forget the wife and child you now know he (or she) is the most deserving cause. God bless Mr Heron for that speech – I’m now off to train as an estate agent in an effort to do more for this vital sector of the economy.

  • “oils the wheels of the housing market”…. Ummm actually I’d say it has done nothing but push prices to the previously unimaginable levels that we now have which has brought the housing market to a complete standstill.

G-d bless the landlords! If it wasn’t for them buying unaffordable houses and renting them out, then all these houses would simply remain empty and we’d all be homeless. So let’s exempt their income from VAT and national insurance as a quid pro quo.

  • The problem is, whilst there are a huge number of VIs that have the ear of the government, there is noone to put forward the oppossing view (namely that BTLers are social parasites). I can already see government ministers nodding in agreement on hearing this drivel (not leaset as many of them are into BTL) and giving them even more taxpayers money (directly and/or indirectly).

Even better than that Jack, what I might do from now on is on the first of every month i’ll slip a great pile of banknotes into his sweaty palm.

Hitherto now he’s been selflessly performing a social philanthropic duty but, I must admit, I feel guilty about taking advantage of his generosity.
