Don’t you step on my blue suede shoes.

Ed Miliband: we could allow a rise in council tax

Grant Shapps, the local authority minister, said: “Ed Miliband’s let the cat out of the bag. Labour’s opposition to a council tax freeze, which would save families £72 a year, shows their disdain for hard-working families. I understand that might not be a lot of money to Ed Miliband but it will be a help to families up and down the country.” Reminds me of the song "You can tax my job, tax my car, tax the liquor in the old fruit jar, tax anything you wanna do, but aha honey don't tax my house"

  • The amount we pay already is ridiculous. Here in Dundee it’s £1738 per year for this house I’m renting. Poll tax was badly executed but it’s only logical for council tax to be based on the number of people using the local services, rather than the number of bathrooms in the house, which doesn’t even give you an accurate measure of water usage, never mind anything else.

  • I dare say Millipede could allow an increase in this absurdly high tax. People like him thrive on high taxes.

Actually poll tax was much better. But the mistake was in setting it far too high.

Council services need to be radically reduced to the level that will allow a poll tax to work.

As far as I’m concerned, all I want is the rubbish collected and the roads maintained. They can stick the rest of their “services” where the sun don’t shine.

  • Labour just can’t get out of the habbit of seeing ever increasing house prices as a cash cow.

Well, it’s one for the money,
    Two for the show,
    Three to get ready,
    Now go, vat, go.

Phils, you got it at least.

@ Everybody else – you appear to subscribe to this bizarre notion that ‘Council Tax pays for local services’.

Until you wake up and accept that Council Tax is a national tax and the amount raised only pays for about ten per cent of ‘local services’ anyway, there’s not really much point having this debate. Council Tax is the second closest thing to Land Value Tax so i shall continue to support it above all other forms of taxation (apart from Business Rates and Fuel Duty).

That’s one good thing about public services: they are not provided according to the preferences of one person. As for poll tax being better than council tax, you would appear to support highly regressive taxation.

  • Christine Melsom says:

A saver, don’t forget water is included in council tax in Scotland.
Just how much council tax supports local services does depend very much on where you live. Taking out ring fenced education grant, Southern council tax payers fund about 80% of their councils services. This can almost be reversed for most of the Northern councils. I hope that the Government will rectify this discrimination. The same may well apply to Land Value Tax, it will take no account of income. People must remember that residence in the Southern part of the country does not mean wealth to most of the population.

Do you have lots of fire extinguishers in your house and a good first aid kit if the fire extinguishers don’t work?
