The latest coalition property tax proposal is just as stupid as the last one

The latest coalition property tax proposal is just as stupid as the last one

Nick Clegg's 'mansion tax' was roundly dismissed as a stupid idea. But now it's back. And the new version has all the same problems as the original.

  • ‘Property rich but cash poor.’

If you can’t afford to run a huge house, buy down. Simples!

We have the poor farmer arguement. Sell up and buy another business like other people have to do.

Am I not being precious enough.

..And what about the cash rich, but property poor??? You don’t count because the banks are not fleecing you. Well, not directly.

  • Of course it’s a bad idea. It’s just another tax.

More money from private individuals to the state.

More power to politicians. More power to bureaucrats.

  • peter, it’s not another tax. It’s just a tax. Whether it is an additional tax or an alternative tax depends on how it is deployed. You’re going to get taxed anyway, so why object to being taxed more fairly?

@ Peter, I am a small government, low tax kind of person. But so what? LVT is still the least-bad kind of tax.

My new slogan is “Of course LVT is the fairest tax of all – those people who are willing and able to pay the most tax get to live in the biggest houses, the nicest locations or have the biggest gardens. If you don’t want to pay so much tax, or you want to be a net welfare recipient, then do the decent thing and budge over.”

PON, when have I ever said anything against the Cornish? Don’t blame me for the disparity between earnings and house prices down your way.

The people who are doing you over are a) The Duke of Cornwall and b) all the wealthy pensioners who move there, buy up what houses they can get and then complain when the local want to build some for themselves. LVT will give these people the kick up the 4rse they need so they sell their second homes again, trade down a bit or allow more new development.

PON, do I have to spell everything out to the last letter?

Tack on the words”… or allow more housing to be built in your area” at the end.
