Enterprising landlords find innovative solution to housing crisis

Slough Council takes action on illegal shed dwellings

Illegal sheds in back gardens which have been converted into housing are being inspected by Slough Borough Council as part of a housing crackdown. Recent years have seen an increase in landlords converting sheds in their back gardens into illegal dwellings. In the past three months, a housing team from Slough council has inspected 300 suspected 'sheds with beds'. The council has served 133 notices, requesting landlords to remove kitchens and showers from the sheds. The council describes the 'sheds with beds' as residential chalet style buildings at the back of occupied properties. The housing teams found that 40 sheds out of those inspected were hazardous due to problems such as poor electrics and only eight dwellings out of the 300 were found to be paying council tax.

  • Is it any wonder people are resorting to living in sheds and make-shift homes?

Where does the gov’t expect people to live. Fewer homes than required, and prices unaffordable. A home used to be a basic essential, along with heating and water, and food.

Perhaps, we should all be issued with cardboard boxes and allocated a space somewhere.

Our basics are being eroded. From lolly-pop ladies and public conveniences to homes. Enough is enough. What else can one do to be heard?

  • Slough council ought to spend its time (and money) repairing holes in the road.

    Not snooping round people’s sheds.

  • Agreed. The gap between the haves and have nots is what has caused the revolutions in the Middle East. I don’t see why it should be any different here. FFS an OTT bonus of £50,000 would get you a bloody good car – where does the £2.25m come from, and the company lost money!!!
Banks look after our money whether a business or private individual. For this service they used to retain a small charge. Then they moved on to skimming off as much as they could get away with but now, following capitulation by the politicians, they take as much as they want.

  • I wonder what policies fed the demand for third world accommodation and overcrowding?

  • WHY CAN’T THEY LEAVE PEOPLE THE F**K ALONE ????

Honestly I am so pissed off with this country. If someone wants to live in a shed for £50 a week then they should be allowed.

  • Bit surprised about the comments so far.

These chalet/sheds are mushrooming in many areas and are let to mainly immigrants who are living in sub standard conditions.

No planning /building regs adherred to , little or no tax being paid and to top it all the unfortunates living there are able to undercut the genuine trades people day rates (which forces them on the dole/benefits ) because they are prepared to put up with living in a low cost slum .

The main reason the councils have not done little so far is they will concered about being called racist as most properties are owned by a non national (Slough /Southall etc). In one borough a local councillor was found to be carrying out the practice. There have been some genuine cases to house extended families which I can understand , but many have now moved onto outright exploitation of the next generation of immigrants.

This is a classic race to the bottom for everybody (except the LL) , if you support this then you (may be naive about the situation or ) are accepting that modern day slums are acceptable and no tax should be paid on this income and its alright to undercut those workers who are paying taxes and mortagages/market rents etc
