Not news, however it is interesting.

Bit of a computer geek myself, and was just thinking about the collapse in mortgage lending Are the banks not lending or are people not looking to borrow? This graph may hold the answer.

If yuo read the ecxonomist RIchard Koo, you would conclude it’s the latter. In fact it’s more complicated. The banks ar only lending to people who have better credit ratings than their own, and it’s that group that’s not wishing to borrow.

Are the banks not lending or are people not looking to borrow? – combination of the two, in times of uncertainty people have a higher propoensity to save (which might include paying down debt)
The other factor (IMO) is the fact that Brokers cant be bothered at present with the f***ing hassle and lack of remuneration on mortgages (Direct deals from lenders having a big impact)

I get a very similar graph for ‘insurance’:

or ‘electricity’:

Brilliant Drewster. That was one of my first searches too…
I do like how the graph shows a significant dip in interest in Q4 of each year. Where were we last month? 112million? How low do you think December could go?

there is a big spike in searches for porn at xmas. Must be the seasonalised santa effect.

@7 – In fact the overall bullmarket in online porn, despite a slight wobble recently, seems to be leading the recovery 😉
