Those damn houseprices

Chinese demonstrations continue to spread

The situation took a strange twist, however, as protesters in Baoji, Shaanxi Province, appeared to vent their frustration with China's widening income gaps and corruption, carrying green banners that read, "We oppose corruption in the bureaucracy" and "Curb high housing prices."

  • So the Chinese authorities told people to demonstrate against the Japanese, and gave them the impression that demonstrating is both legitimate and that it can achieve meaningful change. They probably should have thought it through more carefully….

  • You’re absolutely correct Drewster.

    Chinese authorities have fomented internal dissent for foreign state brinkmanship purposes for some time, especially against the Japanese whenever it has suited the Chinese government.

    What they haven’t appreciated is that it tends to give the hoi polloi an appetite for dissent.
