George is a moron

Child Benefit: Your questions answered

So, we'll see a hefty rise in divorce and so more need for social housing. I think GO assumes the public are honest. 1st big mistake George, especially with £2.5k to lose if you have 3 children. How about something truly progressive like a clamp down on off shore loopholes or introducing Land Value Tax.

  • Off Shore Loopholes? An old chestnut if ever there was one. You’ll never clamp down enough to stop the really rich avoiding tax. They would just move somewhere else. Thinking about that – so would I if I could.

Did I miss something or …. Why exactly does cutting child benefit result in a “hefty” rise in divorce as you have just stated?
From personal experience and those of many around me these days I would have to say it makes absolutely no difference whatsoever.

I’ve always thought it a little odd that people earning “around” 44k or more a year can claim “any” benefit.

Ok I can see that nobody wants taken money taken off them – that includes me. But I would also have to admit if I was being honest that if I was a higher rate earner earning 44k a year I should not really expect to get any benefits in the first place. Although allowing 2 people in the same household to have a combined salary of 87k and still claim it seems rather odd in fact I would go as far to say daft.
