This whole wailing about the demise of the company final salary pension scheme is just Blue Socialism. I fail to see how the basic idea is any different from the good old fashioned Socialist notion that the evil capitalist employers should pay for pensions for the hard pressed and downtrodden workers.

The gimmick is of course that pension funds own a huge chunk of shares in UK plc, so OT1H they want shareholder returns to go up but OTOH with their trade union hats on they want deferred salaries, i.e. pension promises, to go up.

A halfway decent taxpayer funded Citizen's Pension is the way to go, the rest is just up to negotiation between employer, employee and shareholder and none of the government's business.
