Seven banks bring 2009 U.S. failures total to 52

Seven banks were closed by regulators on Thursday, including six in Illinois, bringing the total for 2009 to 52 as the U.S. banking system remains under pressure from rising unemployment and record foreclosures.

  • Only another 8,350 banks left in the US now, if WaMu and Wachovia are not too big to fail or get taken over then we could see more than the expected 1000 bank failures in the next few years, especially if the US house price decline keeps going for that long.
