‘Has great potential’

Three-bed house for sale at just £5,000

It has no roof, no windows and probably not a very careful previous owner but, at just £5,000, is one of the cheapest houses in the country. The three-bedroom hole in Stockton-on-Tees, near Middlesbrough, 'has great potential', said estate agent Ian Pattinson. It seems you will not get much bother from the neighbours, either. It is to be auctioned this month.

  • Why pay 5000 quid for this dump when you’ll soon be able to find a four-bedroom in knightsbridge for the same price?

  • The average cost of a house in the UK now stands at £180,000, which is 25% less than the same time last year.

    Interesting quote from the BEEB

I didn’t think that any of the indexes had lost 25% yet. Any ideas?

  • Now that is a good idea Plato. I am trying to buy a house in Surrey at the moment. Don’t think the estate agents or sellers understand about recession, they are still trying to sell houses at top prices and not taking offers. I am bored.

  • Talking of old wrecks (for the Withnail fans out there) – there’s a website that’s been set up for the purchase of Crow Crag (Sleddale Hall) where fans can make a pledge. The auction’s on the 16th.

  • Have any of the contributors to this site ever been to Stockton on Tees, or Middlesbrough, for that matter?

If you have, you’ll appreciate that £5k is probably about the right price for the area.
