Just drop the damn price!

Frenzy of freebies to tempt homebuyers

Housebuilders and homeowners struggling to sell property in a market frozen by the seizing-up of mortgage lending are turning to more and more elaborate incentives to tempt wary homebuyers. Developers, housebuilders and homeowners are setting up competitions and offering to pay for items from gas bills to DVD rentals to encourage purchases.

  • Dave Mackie, 49, from Lancashire, is trying to sell his three-bedroom house by selling 14,000 £50 tickets to enter a Sudoku competition.

Can’t really see how that will move things along.

Developer MIA hopes to sell off a £8.25m development of 11 flats in east London – and raise money for Great Ormond Street hospital – by getting 200,000 subscribers to enter a general knowledge quiz online by buying £50 tickets

Again – what? Asking potential buyers to fork out £50 “to raise money for the children” so that they can enter a general knowledge quiz?

What have these initiatives got to do with selling their houses?

  • We are still in the ‘denial stage’ of the bursting bubble. The rise up lasted much longer than predicted, so the falls will take longer.

  • All these schemes, raffles etc were tried at the start of the last housing bust at the end of the 1980’s.

Looks like history is repeating itself again.
