“Councils do not have discretion in how they administer the housing benefit system. We must follow the government’s rules.”
So if the Government were to change the rules and let councils build lots of social housing again, to replace all that that has been sold off, that would go some way to help meet the needed housing demand. So that’s my advice. To stop articles like this appearing and embarrassing everyone concerned, vote for someone who will re-invigorate the public social sector.
After all, if you think it’s wrong for public money to fund private landlords, consider where your cross should go the next time you get the chance.
