  • Even if you don’t believe, pray. Please; maybe we can ask for mercy of the Lord so that this doesn’t happen.

This was what I was so afraid of.

Worshipping of false idols. Totally insane. It’s hard to comprehend commiting suicide in such circumstances let alone the murdering of his family. One can only assume that he became so totally pre-occupied with material wealth that his self worth imploded when he lost it. This is very sad, but there will be more of it I’m sure.

  • He’s not alone. Similar things happened in Asia’s ‘tiger’ economies in 1997-8 when the electronic herd stampeded and shorted the region. The ensuing crisis saw a big spike in suicides, including family suicides in South Korea, where fathers hanged themselves and their families.

Almost certainly a sociopath – they can have a tendency to take others with them when they commit suicide. Since they can’t properly relate to other people and their needs, i.e. see them as objects of their gratification, it’s no different for them than setting fire to their house or cars when they commit suicide. Same goes for that chap in Shropshire, and Hitler with Eva Braun and Goebbles the children, etc, etc. Studies have shown that those types of Personality Disorder are more prevalent in business leaders than the criminal population. It’s hardly surprising that this kind of thing happens when things go wrong. They want to smash their toys so nobody else can play with them after they’ve gone – their toys are other human creatures they come across.

  • phdinbubbles – but there’s cultural stuff going on here too. SE Asia during the financial crisis of the late ’90s saw massive unemployment and many families selling their daughters into the sex trade. Some fathers saw family suicide as the only way out.

Of course all cases are different and the mind of someone who’s taking their own life is far from rational, but even so, this guy strikes me as someone who is a disgusting turd, or sociopath, or however you want to put it, rather than someone driven to the brink of despair and doing perhaps some kind of mercy job on his suffering family. I can’t imagine behaving like that myself in this particular situation at the end of the day. And there is an overwhelming correlation between those driven by material posession and those that are unable to relate at an to others on anything more than a superficial level. Just stating the bleeding obvious really.

  • It’s worth remembering that this was an Indian family, probably with a strong emphasis on family, and there may have been elements in his mind of what you call doing a mercy job on the family. He decided that there was no point in killing himself alone since the problem, as he saw it, of family insecurity or lack of a future would not go away. There may not be that much psychological difference between this guy and the fathers of the South Korean families I mentioned earlier. This is obviously not excusing the guy, just an attempt to explain.

I think I struggle with reconciling the idea of a strong emphasis on family and murdering your family.

  • It happens nevertheless. You accepted the idea of ‘doing a mercy job on his suffering family’.
