  • XL employees about 1700 people. I reckon 1/4 to 1/3 of them will not be able to find a job any soon. So 400 – 500 job loss.
Well, on average, we have been losing this many jobs almost everyday since the downturn. The only reason this one got the headline is because its 250,000 custumers are affected.

Mark, no I don’t know. However, we flew with them once and experienced an 11 hour delay on the return flight for no good reason other than their airline being badly run. We promised ourselves we’d never fly with them again, and it looks like we now have no way of breaking that promise.

I would feel sorry for the people losing their jobs, and I’m sure most of them don’t deserve it. However, as a result of the delay we wasted a day’s holiday. We tried to claim compensation for the delay, which we were supposedly entitled to under (then) recently introduced EU rules, but XL did everything they could to worm their way out of it, obviously knowing that the EU (though helpful) were pretty toothless about enforcing those rules. That experience makes me a little less sympathetic about XL’s plight.

Unfortunately, those that most deserve to lose their jobs have probably already pocketed as much as they can from the company’s coffers in self-awarded bonuses.
