"It is 16 years since the British economy was last in a recession. Most of our leading politicians and bankers have forgotten what it's like. They will soon relearn". .............. Hmmmmm! Interesting viewpoints. Seems to me the main point has been carefully sidestepped.
Surely the whole pack of cards collapsed because it was beginning to be discovered that a degree of crimminality had infested the edifice at every level. For the banks to reinflate their coffers again they need to be seen to be pure as driven snow (???).

“There were calls for a new government agency to back mortgages. After the costly problems of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac in the US that doesn’t look too cleaver either. ”

Cleaver? An apt reference to butchery or is the spilling chequer, misbehaving again.
