Fraud often increases in times of economic slowdown as people and companies become more desperate, but the sharp rise in recent months underlines the depth of the current crisis. But according to brown we are wealthy and dont have inflation..

I’ve worked in fraud, and have studied the topic a lot. There are some things people often don’t understand about fraud:
1. Where there is power, there is corruption. You cannot have power without some degree of corruption. If you have power without corruption, it’s because the body in power is not transparent.
2. ‘Fraud’ as a definition is a bit like the term ‘terrorism’ – it is a partisan catch-all. If Transport For London overcharges you and refuses to repay you, they are guilty of being ‘negligent to their customers’. If a customer travels on the underground without paying the full fare, they are guilty of ‘committing fraud’. This parallel works across organizations too – the simplest way to reduce theft in retail organizations is to pay your lowest paid logistics staff a living wage (seriously).

Has fraud really increased by 74% is a few months? I suspect that this fraud has been going on for a long time but with money getting tight management is now starting to pay attention.
