New evidence….orchistrated boom….orchistrated bust

Speculators' domination may fuel oil price rises

The oil market is now dominated by speculators who account for almost three quarters of its activity, new evidence has shown.

  • from article “The fact that oil prices rose rather than fell yesterday may embarrass Gordon Brown, the Prime Minister, who flew out to the Jeddah meeting to urge producers to pump more crude.”

pump more crude so speculators can make more money! Thanks Gordon.

perhap Marrs was right after all.

The article presents ‘new evidence’ but actually says very little, contradicting the original point later on. Is anyone any clearer?

What is clear, however, is that ‘orchestrated boom, orchestrated bust’ is simply an opinion which none of the ‘evidence’ points to. Not surprising.

  • Yep – and a misspelled opinion at that. Yet another news blog post making us all look like barely-literate nutters and devaluing the site further.

Yes, the oil price is being fuelled in part by speculation. I don’t think anyone disagrees with that – but there is a difference of opinion as to whether this constitutes “orchestrating” the boom – I think many speculators do genuinely believe that oil demand will continue to grow and the price will continue to organically increase.

  • S2R1:

You certainly have some madness about you but I’ve read your posts for some considerable time and your timing is often very good. You probably called the top of the housing market more accurately than any blogger on this site. However, I’m really sure that you are very wrong about a large fall in oil prices and will happily predict that oil will be greater than $125 at CoP in 12 days time. I would love to be wrong.

As for a “consiousness change day” I’ve no idea what that is all about but if you are right and oil does take a fall I will look more closely.

  • I know a oil man who works abroad he told me 9 months ago they are looking for $175 a barrel
and he also said its still cheaper then a cup of tea. So far he has been right.

s2r1 – how is what you are saying any different from anyone else? Soros says oil is a bubble – so do you (after he did). Articles have been appearing for a while now predicting that things could get worse before they get better. More banks needing bailouts….ditto.

Sorry, I just don’t see what extra insight you are providing. What form do you see this ‘final destruction’ taking – I think you mentioned hyperinflation or depression before?

I actually hope people do see through this whole mess and demand change – always have done. I don’t share your conviction that it will be any more than a demand to return to the status quo, though. There is no-one on the horizon campagning on anything like monetary reform of even tax reform – as for the US – hasn’t Ron Paul withdrawn?

For what its worth, I also find S2R1’s Calleman-Mayan Calender stuff rather odd. I haven’t the time to readup on it and at the moment I haven’t a great deal of inclination to either. However, to my mind he has with a small number of others on here been over at least a year quite prescient regarding global macro-economics in a way that no other commentators that I have access to have been. As a result of reading his and others postings on here I have been able to be many months ahead of many of colleagues and friends in my understanding of what is going on and I have been able to take measures materially beneficial to my long term personal finances that I would not otherwise have done.

I have to say for the record, and largely by instinct, that I have severe doubts about about whether the Calleman-Mayan Calender methodology really can be predictive, but I also know that the Universe is largely built on repeatable patterns and that the process of identifying and understanding the truly fundamental patterns has allowed us to advance our knowledge to the point where we are at today. Its therefore just possible that there is something in this even though I can’t see it myself and therefore I have to add that to my mind I believe it’s more likely to be mumbo-jumbo than reality.

However, a clear prediction has been made and as far as I can tell it has been made on the basis of the Calleman-Mayan technique (although I think its possible to be bold and say the oil price will crash anyway because bubbles always do and all the awful consequences then follow logically) that can be tested just by waiting. If the prediction does not materialise for many weeks or months then I think that its reasonable to conclude the Calleman-Mayan methodology is flawed and I would expect over time to hear rather less about it. On the other hand if the prediction works out then I suspect we’ll all be queing up to learn it.

No-one can argue that major shocks to the global economy do not have a significant effect on HPC and therefore I think that any topic that potentially informs about them is relevant to this site. I also think this is all about collective learning and whatever happens there is no way that one should demand another to stop posting here simply because they made a prediction that turned out to be wrong.

    I second what NotAnEconomicsGuru said.

Let S2R1/Malct post their comments, we are in the last throes of a free country that still has some free speech left. New ideas should be welcomed, not stiffled because a few people find them uncomfortable. If you don’t like S2R1/Malct posts – then DONT READ THEM! It’s pretty simple.

Personally, I read peoples postings here with an open mind, without trying to judge, insult or attempt to silence the poster(s).

Of the conspiracy theorists (S2R1, MALCT & P4AC) S2R1 is the only one who is worth reading. In the early days before he acheived a higher level of consciousness he even made good sense. A little less mayan calendar stuff wouldn’t go a miss though.

I was being more than a bit tongue in cheek when suggesting he should leave the site, but as you say I do wish he would stay just a bit more on topic, and not repeat himself so much.

holding out, I take that as a compliment! My headmaster said in one of my reports that “planning4acrash (names altered for anonymity) remains an enigma” Well, Richard Branson’s Head Master actually called him exactly that! Now, all of you want to stay on topic, but, that is part of the compartmentalised mindset that let us get into this mess in the firstplace. If we all had a view of the bigger picture and could understand/discuss it freely, we would be fine. If, voters could critique b(w)ankers and not rely on their self interest, we would be all hunky dory, them fearing us. In essence, this website, if allowed, has become the headline economic/political trend of the day.co.uk But some of you resist that! Some of us combine metaphysics with our political/economic understanding, and include non-mainstream critique, because we know that you cannot explain the mess without that critique. The fundamental issue is, that those who criticise have a cognitive dissonance, whereby they reject things that do not fit their word view. I was sceptic about the mayan stuff, but went out and read two of calleman’s books, and took from it some fascinating insights, I don’t agree with all he says, which is why I have added some unique personal insights to the theory. That is what life is about. So, if you can’t be bothered to research something, at least avoid the cognitive dissonance please!

S2R, I look forward to the judicial review result tomorrow. From the tone of the judge, in relation to the government’s bloody mindedness, he will favor the constitution over downright totalitarianism. This will be your battle of the bulge event. It hits squarely on the 25th. Power coming into balance with reasoned law at this point. Co-incidentally, I’ll be out protesting and handing out leaflets against the ID cards on the 6th, so, for me, its already taken on energy, prior to even hearing your date. It feels right to me, tho, I focus on rationing between September and December for changes to the general populace to emerge.

I do not believe they do any harm to this site, quite the opposite in fact.I also fervently believe in free speech for ALL bloggers here. What i detest is certain bloggers who consistantly attack others here who they label as conspiraloons etc whilst at the same time they are not contributing anything of any interest.
