Brian Bloom talks sense again

Causes of Global Food Crisis- Time for Honesty!!

The 3 causes are: (1) Biofuels Security Act of 2007 (2) Overpopulation (3) Global warming, which was caused by unusually high solar flare activity which, in turn, gave rise to widespread droughts across the face of the planet. (Solar flares inhibit cloud formation).

All Brian Bloom’s ideas will be needed as the world heads towards full crisis in 2011.
We are seeing the tip of the iceberg at the moment (2008).

  • Shame about the last one. These people don’t help writing this kind of rubbish. No wonder the idiot PM agrees with him.

Opinionated drivel, mixed with a couple of interesting ideas.

“Global warming, which was caused by unusually high solar flare activity” Actually no, the “it’s all caused by solar flare activity” argument has been disproved, as a simple reading of Wikipedia will show (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_warming#Solar_variation).

“Nuclear fission, the politician’s panacea, fails the integrity test. If scientists are hot under the collar about CO2 (which the plants need for their survival, by the way), how can they possibly defend a technology which has radioactive material as its by-product?”. Brian here is implying that scientists want to completely eradicate CO2 which is totally false and misleading. Also, James Lovelock positively advocates using Nuclear Waste to protect the planet! As he says, it’s not harmful to short lived animals or plants, just to humans!

Interesting ideas about using Algae to turn desert into productive land though. Wonder how feasible that is.

  • sold 2 rent 1,

I agree that food shortages in poor parts of the world is a huge issue that is more important than house prices in the western World of obesity. Unfortunately, I’m not very optimistic that there will be a decent solution. I predict poor people starving to death. That is human nature.

Quiet Guy, heartless though this may sound, there are various ways in which the number of ‘poor people’ might fall. Number one, they starve to death. Number two they stop having so many kids. Number three, they adopt a system called ‘Free markets and democracy’ and stop being poor. It’s their call.

Question: How many degrees Celsius would our atmosphere have to rise to result in a one degree Celsius rise in our ocean’s temperatures?

    Answer – 769 degrees. Where’s the catch?

    (1 deg x 10 km x 100%) divided by (3,512 x 3 km x 70%) = 0.0013. 1 divided by 0.0013 = 769

And Bussard may indeed be on to something but I sorely doubt it.

  • The catch is that Brian Bloom knows sod-all about basic physics. The zeroth law of thermodynamics (which even my 4-year-old son has an intuitive grasp of) states that systems in close thermal contact will tend towards the same temperature. It doesn’t matter how big or small they are! CO2 in the atmosphere absorbs heat, which is then mostly transferred to the oceans. The oceans act as a buffer to slow down global warming, but their capacity is still finite.

I saw Nigel Lawson plugging his book on Newsnight the other night. Apparently the real “inconvienient truth” is that there has been no increase in global temperature this century – despite China bringning a new coal fired power station on line every two weeks plus the rise of the budget airlines and so on. CO2 output is just the latest bandwagon to jump on. Now HPC is becoming mainstream I am thinking about joining a bogus global warming blog to re-kindle that feeling of being an outcast!

  • Come on guys we wouldn’t be in this mess if it wasn’t for peoples greed and utter selfishness. It has been proved that the world is well capable of feeding itself.
